Same street. Different hour. Whatever. Wandering the streets, just another nameless face. Nowhere I gotta go, nowhere I gotta be today. Guy with a paper cup talking like somebody listens. Bus door opens up, three get off, nobody misses. Store clerk changing out a sign, same sale as last week. Lady walks her little dog, dog looks more awake than me. I keep moving with the crowd, never really join the line. Same day, different time. Nobody knows me here. That works. Nobody asks too much. Even better. I pass through, they pass by. Same day. Different time. Same day, different time, same corner, different light. Just a face behind the faces, moving somewhere out of sight. No big reason, no grand design. I’m just killing off the minutes till they stop feeling like mine. Same day. Different time. Crosswalk counts me down from ten, I make it there on two. Somebody drops a set of keys, somebody says, “That you?” Nah. Keep walking. Restaurant stacking up the chairs, kitchen’s cleaning down the night. Two people arguing real quiet, trying not to make it a fight. Window catches half my face, then a truck rolls through the frame. For a second I’m somebody. Then I’m nobody again. Same day, different time, same corner, different light. Just a face behind the faces, moving somewhere out of sight. No big reason, no grand design. I’m just killing off the minutes till they stop feeling like mine. Same day. Different time. Background person. Wrong scene. Walked through somebody’s photograph without knowing what it means. Maybe I’m in there somewhere. Little blur beside the sign. Same day. Different time. Same day, different time, same street under different light. Everybody going somewhere. I just never asked them why. No big ending. No finish line. Turn the corner, keep it moving. Leave the rest a block behind. Same day. Different time. Same street. Different hour. Still here.
