Stingy Jack’s Tale

V5

[Verse 1] Stay for a tick, let me spin you a yarn, Auld Jack in the dark with a devilish charm, Lantern lit, not a candle but a coal, Swindled the Devil, man, sold him his soul. Pints poured heavy, but the tab ran dry, Jack slick as grease, made the Devil comply, Promised his freedom, tricked him instead, Left him tangled in tricks 'til the morning spread. [Prechorus] Hollow turnips grinned with a ghastly flame, Wandering the earth, never resting the same. [Chorus] Stingy Jack, oh, Stingy Jack, The cunning lad with the devil on his back. Stingy Jack, oh, Stingy Jack, Left in the dark, never finding his track. [Verse 2] He met the Devil again by a crooked old tree, Said, “Climb for an apple, I’ll set you free.” The Devil bit the bait, bark rough 'neath his claws, Jack carved a cross, broke infernal laws. No heaven above, no hell below, A purgatory wanderer, cursed to and fro. With a turnip lantern, glowing dim in his hand, Stingy Jack roams the mist of no-man’s-land.
