Intro / Verse 1 Humphrey, the hunchback hippo, He looks like a one-hump camel, too weird for the herd to handle, so he mostly stands alone. On his hunchback a bird has made a home, the bird is Alfred, and he’s Humphrey’s friend. The two are one of a kind, and can’t really blend. Humphrey is scared of the water, but gets forced out once in a while by his mother. He hates it but has no choice, when Mama hippo calls with a firm voice. Humphrey’s brother is the strongest in the herd, so nobody dares to mess with Humphrey and his bird. But they laugh in the shadows when Humphrey comes with his friend, the sparrow. When they play, they never let him join, but Humphrey doesn’t mind. He’s got Alfred and his brother, who protects him like no other. Even if he thinks his little brother is a bit weird, it’s his little brother, so he doesn’t care. He fights anyone who tries to take his throne, and if it weren’t for him, Humphrey wouldn’t have a home. ⸻ Chorus Humphrey and Alfred, tip-toe away, Sneak through the night till the break of day. Humphrey and Alfred, quick out of sight, Tip-toe, tip-toe, home before the daylight. ⸻ Verse 2 Humphrey, the hunchback hippo, looks like a one-hump camel, too weird for the herd to handle, But Humphrey has Alfred, he’s never alone, On Humphrey’s back, Alfred has his throne. They lay in the shadows away from the sun, talk about what’s beyond the plains, how long it would take to walk, how long to run. They wonder about the stars in the sky, why they only shine at night, they wonder why. They wonder if there are elephants on the moon, if the sun will set soon. They wonder why Alfred is scared of heights, why he’s scared to fly, why Humphrey can’t swim, but they are two scared friends, so they don’t even try. ⸻ Chorus Humphrey and Alfred, tip-toe away, Sneak through the night till the break of day. Humphrey and Alfred, quick out of sight, Tip-toe, tip-toe, home before the daylight. ⸻ Verse 3 When the herd sleeps, they sneak away, they know what they are doing, there’s nothing to say. In silence they make their way, they walk all the way to where the humans stay. They stand in the forest by the edge of town, watching all the chaos where everybody’s walking around. The two friends are curious, they come every night, The show is so funny, Alfred laughs with delight, He says, “people are strange”—and he might be right. Then the two friends sneak back in the night and get home before the morning light. ⸻ Chorus (Final) Humphrey, and Alfred, tip-toe away, Sneak through the night till the break of day.
