The beach was a chart of sand and heat, boys and rules in the same small reach. Ralph held the shell up, pale and clean, and every mouth learned what order means. Piggy named the weight, the need, the right, while the island listened, bright with fright. Jack stared past law into hunger’s face, where paint could turn a boy to chase. “Which is better—to have rules and agree, or to hunt and to kill?” The air answers back. The conch! The conch! The conch is the law! The conch! The conch! While it still can call! The beast is inside, and the dark knows our names. The conch! The conch! Before it breaks! Then the fire climbed, then failed, then flared, and shame ran fast where the smoke had stared. A little one slipped from speech and sight, and the mountain kept its patient night. The painted faces learned their own demand, and the hunt went loose through throat and hand. Piggy’s words met stone and were split apart, as reason thudded in a broken heart. Lord of the Flies, maggot and grin, the thing we feared was thick in them. Roger stands on the rock. He pushes. He doesn't stop. No one says a word. The island is a heart. The conch! The conch! The conch is the law! The conch! The conch! While it still can call! The beast is inside, and the dark knows our names. The conch! The conch! Before it breaks! Ralph ran with ash in his eyes, toward the lie of rescue, the end of lies. And when the man came out of the sea, the boys stood there like a memory. A boy can rule. A boy can roast. The conch is lost. The dawn is lost.
