Pink Clouds, Black Tombstones

V6

Pink clouds under my feet Black stones far below Fairy dust caught in my teeth And the clocks refuse to go I woke where the graveyard leaned against the sky Pink vapor curled round the names as I passed by A silver-winged girl put a key in my hand Said, “Turn it backward if you want to understand” Rain climbed upward from the roots of the trees Old photographs blinked with their faces erased My footsteps returned to the prints in the clay And every lost minute came crawling my way Tick goes back, breath goes in Broken hour starts again Hold that key, don’t let it fall One small turn can change it all TURN IT BACK Watch the whole world fold PINK CLOUDS Over black stone cold WINGS OUT I don’t need the ground Fairy fire, spin me round I’m above the tombstones, floating out of frame Time runs backward but I still remember my name If you see me falling, I’m only changing sides With a pocket full of wonder and a storm behind my eyes I’m above the tombstones, drifting through the blue Every impossible door opens when I move No map, no morning, no rule I have to keep I fly where the buried dreams refuse to sleep The moon wore a mask made of porcelain white A rabbit rang bells in the middle of night The river unspooled from the sea to the hill And a paper crown whispered, “Stay if you will” I saw my old fear in a glass carousel It bowed three times, then dissolved like a spell The fairy queen laughed with a mouth full of flame She traded one heartbeat for a brand-new name Left step, rewind, right step, reverse I’m writing tomorrow by reading the first verse The dead leaves rose and returned to the branch The locked gate opened when I stopped trying to chance Don’t blink. The bell is breathing. Hold still. The past is leaving. One spark in the palm Two wings in the dark Three turns of the key Then nothing can mark— Over the cold stone RISE! Leave the old bones BACKSPIN Every second, every sound FAIRY LIGHT Never touch the ground You asked where the road ends I watched it become a thread You asked if I was dreaming I said, “Dreams are overhead” The sky kept folding inward The clouds turned rose and gold I found a door inside the silence And stepped into the unknown Hear the wings? I’m above the tombstones, floating out of frame Time runs backward but I still remember my name If you see me falling, I’m only changing sides With a pocket full of wonder and a storm behind my eyes I’m above the tombstones, drifting through the blue Every impossible door opens when I move No map, no morning, no rule I have to keep I fly where the buried dreams refuse to sleep Pink clouds under my feet Black stones far below The clock forgets to speak And I let the strange wind go
