[VINYL CRACKLE] [GUZHENG — 4 notes] [Scratch] Pat—pat—pat— Pattern. [UPRIGHT BASS] [PROTÉGÉ] You see that? [COSMIC] Which part? [PROTÉGÉ] ...which part? [BEAT DROPS] [COSMIC] One in the rhythm Two in the room Three little signals That shouldn't assume Four different stories All moving alone Then five hits twice— [Scratch] LOOK AGAIN. Same bones. [PROTÉGÉ] Wait. How the fuck Did you see that? [COSMIC] I didn't. [PROTÉGÉ] What? [COSMIC] Not at first. I carried it. [SCRATCH BREAK] [CHORUS] Patterns in patterns Patterns in patterns One hand moving While the other keeps stacking Hold that thought Don't drop this one Something underneath Got another thing running Patterns in patterns [Scratch] LOOK AGAIN. Patterns in patterns Everybody sees the pieces— I keep 'em moving Till the pieces Start talking. [SUB] [COSMIC — RAP] Give me a number A symbol A song Give me somebody saying Something feels wrong Give me the timing The market The cards Give me the architecture Underneath all the parts Don't tell me the answer Put it on the table I wanna see What connects And what only Looks able Because pattern recognition Got a dangerous twin— [PROTÉGÉ] What's that? [COSMIC] Seeing shit That was never connected To begin. [BEAT CUT] [PROTÉGÉ] So how do you know? [COSMIC] I test it. [PROTÉGÉ] And if you're wrong? [COSMIC] I wreck it. [PROTÉGÉ] Even if you love it? [COSMIC] Especially then. [Scratch] TEST—TEST—TEST— [COSMIC] Truth don't owe My favorite theory A happy end. [TAIKO] [CHORUS] Patterns in patterns Patterns in patterns Six balls up And the man's still catching You see chaos I see traffic You see coincidence I say— [Scratch] DON'T CALL IT YET. Patterns in patterns Keep 'em suspended I don't need the meaning Before the observation Is ended. [DJ BREAK] [Scratch fragments] NUMBER— CARD— SONG— TIME— LOOK— AGAIN— [Yangqin enters one pattern] [Shamisen enters another] [Woodblock enters another] [Sub enters another] [PROTÉGÉ] Hold up— Those aren't The same rhythm. [COSMIC] I know. [PROTÉGÉ] They're not even In the same phrase. [COSMIC] I know. [PROTÉGÉ] Then why the hell Do they— [ALL LOOPS INTERLOCK] [PROTÉGÉ] ...oh. [COSMIC laughs] [VERSE — COSMIC] That's the gift. Not predicting. Not knowing What's behind every door. It's holding seven possibilities Without needing To marry one. Watching one pattern Pass through another Then another Pass through that Till the shape Between the shapes Starts showing Where it's at It's a juggler Adding weight But the trick ain't Keeping balls in flight The trick is remembering Which one is evidence Which one's intuition Which one's fear And which one Just caught the light. [PROTÉGÉ] How many you holding Right now? [COSMIC] More than I'm telling you. [PROTÉGÉ] Asshole. [COSMIC] Focus. [BEAT] [PROTÉGÉ — RAP] Okay— Number hit twice Song came next Same damn word In a random text Card on the table Dream last night Market moved— [COSMIC] Stop. [PROTÉGÉ] What? [COSMIC] You're connecting too fast. [PROTÉGÉ] But look! [COSMIC] I am. That's why I'm telling you To wait. [Low gong] [COSMIC] First signal. Second witness. Freeze them apart. Neither gets to change The other one's heart. Then compare. If they rhyme— Interesting. If they don't— Let it die. The gift isn't finding A pattern everywhere. It's being willing To kill one When the pattern Isn't there. [SCRATCH] KILL—THE—PATTERN— [SUB DROP] [FINAL CHORUS] Patterns in patterns Patterns in patterns Mind keeps moving But the center stays planted Hold more See more Don't force The answer Pattern in the symbol Pattern in the language Pattern in the money Pattern in behavior Pattern in the rhythm Pattern in— [BEAT STOPS] [PROTÉGÉ] Wait. [COSMIC] What? [PROTÉGÉ] The first four notes. [COSMIC] Yeah? [PROTÉGÉ] They've been inside The bass line The whole song. [Silence] [COSMIC] Now you're seeing it. [FINAL SECTION] [Scratch] PATTERNS— [Guzheng plays motif] [Scratch] IN— [Upright bass reveals same motif] [Scratch] PATTERNS— [Shamisen reveals same motif] [Scratch] LOOK AGAIN— [Entire beat reveals motif] [PROTÉGÉ] What the fuck... [COSMIC] Don't worship it. [PROTÉGÉ] I know. [COSMIC] What do you do? [PROTÉGÉ] Observe. Test. Learn. [COSMIC] Then? [PROTÉGÉ] Build. [COSMIC] Good. [Scratch] LOOK—LOOK—LOOK AGAIN. [Needle pulls off record] [End]
