Horse In The Back Paddock

There’s a horse in the back paddock And a story to be told About never giving up, nor in ‘Bout fighting getting old This horse was once a lion You can see it in his stare That fire in those burning eyes It lays the spirit bare And back when he was racing When we’d take him into town Before he went to pasture Before he was broken down When he’d come around the final turn With the winning post in sight He’d dig deep, then dig deeper And show us all his fight He’d light ‘em up like Sunshine Like Thunder in he’d roll But the wins don’t go forever And the seasons take their toll But something deep inside me thinks There’s fire in him yet There’s a race or two left in him And he’d win a few I bet Or maybe I should just leave him be To his ripe old days of yore Nah, to Hell with that, he’s a Lion We’ll watch this old boy roar So grab my saddle, and my bridle Ring the bell, and sound the horn Fight the dying of the light Back triumphant, lay forlorn Bring the punters through the gate Bring the thoroughbreds back to the track Let it known from out on high The Old Stallion’s coming back And I’ll keep him on a hold Till I see the turn in sight Then I’ll pop the final question Feel him stiffen, then take flight And we might not win the race But will have won the bloody fight Cause we’d’ve had another crack Before we said good night And Champions are forged in fire They get beaten and knocked down But they’re the ones that get back up Like the old Stallion, cross Murray Brown
