EARTHWORK [Long instrumental intro – 30 sec] [Very deep contrabass drone, bowed cello, warm sub bass, slow circular pulse] [Low male humming gradually emerges from the drone] [Female breath tones appear far in the background] [Very deep male voice – slow, calm] We walk upon this earth as those before us did. It carries every step, and gives us ground to grow. [Instrumental – 20 sec] [Deep circular bass movement, bowed cello, male humming remains far behind] [Low rough female voice] We did not make this ground. We did not make the rain. We are here for just a while, then give it back again. [Instrumental – 25 sec] [Female voice dissolves into low humming] [Male and female drones slowly intertwine] [Both voices – low, restrained] We are rooted in the earth, and rooted in each other. What carries you also carries me. [Deep instrumental transition] [CHORUS – both voices, broad and resonant] EARTHWORK EARTHWORK The ground beneath our lives, the roots beneath our feet. EARTHWORK EARTHWORK We belong to what we never get to keep. [Long instrumental – 35 sec] [Contrabass and cello repeat a circular motif] [Deep male “mmm” drone underneath] [Raw female “oh” tones answer from the distance] [No lyrics] [Very deep male voice] Beneath the surface, roots are reaching out. They cross the space between us without making any sound. [Low female voice] And maybe we are no different. We grow because we meet. We hold another life and something holds our own. [Instrumental – 25 sec] [Slow bass pulse continues] [Male and female humming overlap, no lead vocal] [Both voices – intimate] Nothing grows alone. Neither do we. [Instrumental pause] [CHORUS – both voices] EARTHWORK EARTHWORK The ground beneath our lives, the roots beneath our feet. EARTHWORK EARTHWORK We belong to what we never get to keep. [Very long instrumental section – 40 sec] [Deep droning bass, bowed cello and contrabass] [Slow circular rhythm continues without increasing intensity] [Male basso profundo becomes part of the bass] [Female low humming slowly circles above him] [No lyrics] [Female voice – rough, close] Take what you need and know when it is enough. Leave something in the ground for those who follow us. [Male voice – extremely deep] Because everything we grow will one day leave our hands. And everything we are will find the earth again. [Instrumental – 20 sec] [Music becomes sparse] [Only deep bass resonance and intertwined humming] [Both voices – quiet] We came from borrowed ground. We live on borrowed time. And still, we are connected far beneath the surface. [Instrumental rise – controlled, no dramatic climax] [FINAL CHORUS – both voices, deep and full] EARTHWORK EARTHWORK The ground beneath our lives, the roots beneath our feet. EARTHWORK EARTHWORK We belong to what we never get to keep. EARTHWORK EARTHWORK May we leave this earth with more than we have taken. EARTHWORK EARTHWORK And when we return, let something keep on growing. [Long instrumental outro – 35 sec] [Deep male humming] Mmmmmmmmm… [Low female humming] Ooooooh… [Both voices merge into one deep drone] [Cello and contrabass continue the circular motif] [Both – distant, very low] EARTHWORK [Long bass resonance] EARTHWORK [Voices disappear] [Deep circular pulse continues alone] [Fade into silence]
