Lichen-Covered Stone Dee

There’s a wind in the hair of the plains And it’s tearing the sleep from my head There’s a silence heavier than stone Where the last of the daylight bled I knew a rock on the edge of the hill Wrapped in lichen, facing the town Where the tired hearts and the burning hearts Looked small from the higher ground I loved that stone I loved that sky I loved the sun When it burned out red and died And I stood there Above the low, below the high With a gaze as wide as heaven And a heart too wild to hide That lichen-covered stone Was my point of flight Where the wind cut through the hills And the west caught fire at night I could see the lines in broken shapes I could feel time lose its hold The clock hands ran, but I was gone Past the narrow, past the cold I loved that stone I loved that sky I loved the sun When it burned out red and died And I stood there Above the low, below the high With a gaze as wide as heaven And a heart too wild to hide But I lost it In the colours and the noise I lost it In the anger and the choice I lost it In the rush, in the flame Now that stone is gone And nothing feels the same No lichen-covered stone No corner facing west No wind to clear my head No silence in my chest Still I hear it When the red sun falls Still I feel it In the hills, in the walls I loved that stone I loved that sky I loved the sun When it burned out red and died And I’m still there Above the low, below the high With a gaze as wide as heaven And a heart too wild to hide
