The sails cracked beneath the cries of the people who had gathered to salute their travelers, and despite the freezing air rising from the fjords, no one seemed willing to leave the docks before the ship vanished beyond the horizon. Standing near the prow, Skörta Eldrún looked upon her kingdom one last time. The black paint surrounding her eyes only strengthened the severity of her expression, yet beneath the image of a strong queen hid a weariness she never fully allowed others to see. Her son Erik remained on the docks surrounded by the kingdom’s advisors. He was only sixteen, yet already carried himself with the posture of a future ruler. Skörta slightly raised her chin. “Do not embarrass me while I am gone.” Erik gave a nervous smile. “Only if you promise to return.” The queen held his gaze for a few seconds before turning her eyes toward the sea. “I am a daughter of the North. Returning is what we do.” Then the ship slowly drifted away. The journey west began beneath favorable winds. The crew worked efficiently while several warriors still enjoyed the relative calm before the dangers ahead. Torstein directed the maneuvers with his deep raspy voice, shouting orders between questionable jokes aimed at the sailors, which regularly caused bursts of laughter across the deck. Further away, Johannes Grøn-Ulv quietly bailed water gathered along the side of the ship. Despite his imposing stature, he worked with a strange serenity. Bruno observed him for a moment before finally approaching. Johannes immediately noticed him and offered a nearly paternal smile. “So young man, have you finally found your place aboard a ship, or are you still waiting for the sea to carry you by itself?” Bruno sat beside him calmly. “You know I saw you in one of my dreams?” Johannes continued working as though the question did not surprise him. “Well I hope I looked just as handsome in your dream as I do in real life.” A faint smile appeared on Bruno’s face, though his eyes remained serious. “I mean it. I saw you exactly like this. And there was that wolf.” He paused before lowering his voice. “I am not stupid, Johannes. Do you have anything to do with the king’s death?” This time Johannes stopped completely. He set his bucket aside before sitting next to the boy. “You are far more observant than most men on this ship.” He waited a moment before adding with quiet confidence: “You probably inherited that from your father.” Bruno slightly frowned at the remark, but Johannes continued before he could react. “I am not your enemy. Far from it. I want to discover who is behind all of this just as much as you do.” “Why?” Bruno immediately asked. “What do you gain from it?” Johannes lifted his eyes toward the clouds slowly drifting above the sails. “The balance of the world is sometimes worth more than a war or a kingdom.” His tone became heavier. “The gods are tearing each other apart right now, Bruno. I can feel it deep within my bones.” Bruno answered almost instantly. “Are you a god?” Johannes discreetly glanced around before placing a friendly hand on the boy’s shoulder. Bruno gently pushed the arm away, seeking answers rather than companionship. Johannes let out an amused chuckle. “The gods can take many forms. Some inspire greatness... others bring only hunger and ruin.” His gaze briefly drifted toward the horizon. “And sometimes, they already live inside men.” Bruno remained silent for a few seconds. “Are you talking about yourself... or Mikell?” As though summoned by his own name, Mikell Skar appeared behind them wearing his eternal crooked smile. “Careful boy, sounding jealous of my eye is starting to hurt my feelings.” He patted Bruno on the back before casually leaning against the railing. Bruno sighed, clearly frustrated that nobody seemed to take him as seriously as he hoped. “Johannes, I am not joking. In my dream there was a wolf. Can Fenrir see through you?” Johannes brushed a hand through his damp hair with an almost proud smile. “You could say that.” He lowered his voice slightly. “But I am also here to keep him contained. I learned how to live with that part of him.” Then he stood back up with a tired groan. “Ah Bruno... you ask far too many questions for someone who still cannot grow a proper beard.” The young man rolled his eyes while Johannes returned to work. Yet before leaving, the man turned back with a mischievously teasing look. “And if you truly want answers...” He gave him a wink. “You could always ask your mother.” Then he walked away to help the sailors. A slight tension tightened Bruno’s chest. At the rear of the drakkar, Min Shieldthrower stood beside Mikal-Finnvard Arvast. She calmly adjusted a fur blanket over the jarl’s shoulders while discreetly watching her son from afar. When Bruno finally turned his eyes toward her, Min immediately felt her stomach tighten. She knew that look. The look of a child beginning to understand. Her heart suddenly raced, yet her face remained perfectly calm. Long ago, she had learned how to survive behind appearances. In the distance, Johannes continued laughing with the sailors as though nothing in the world truly mattered. But Min knew that aboard this ship, secrets were slowly beginning to rise to the surface. Like forgotten bodies beneath a sea that had remained silent for far too long. 💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍 The longship cut the waves Like scars through frozen skin A boy searched for answers Inside a wolfish grin Johannes laughed softly But hid his teeth too well And somewhere beneath silence Old gods began to swell “Dreams are never only dreams...” “And wolves never sleep...” The boy had seen the beast Behind the mortal face A shadow wearing laughter A hunger wrapped in grace Fenrir watched the oceans Through blood and broken bone And Bruno felt the cold truth No man survives alone “The sea remembers names...” “And gods remember fear...” “THE HUNGER OF NJORDHEIM!” Who guides the wolves tonight? The sea drinks every secret Beneath the northern light “THE HUNGER OF NJORDHEIM!” No king escapes the tide Bruno stared in silence At eyes too old for men Johannes spoke like thunder Then laughed away again “Some gods arrive as saviors...” “Some rot the world apart...” But every beast grows teeth Inside a frightened heart [Bruno] “You carry something inside you... don’t you?” [Johannes] “We all do, boy. Some of us are simply honest enough to admit it.” [Bruno] “And the wolf?” [Johannes] “The wolf is always hungry.” “THE HUNGER OF NJORDHEIM!” The wolves can smell the sky And every god still living Will someday learn to die “THE HUNGER OF NJORDHEIM!” The black sea calls their names The sons of Fenrir rise now Through storms and sacred flames “THE HUNGER OF NJORDHEIM!” No chain can hold them long The gods will drown together Inside the serpent’s song “Ek sé þik, ungr drengr.” “Blóð mitt vaknar í skugga þér.” “Ek mun leysa föður minn ór fjötrum Óðins.” “Ok þú... munt fylgja mér.”
