Grumpy Gus
[Verse 1] Nobody volunteered for Gus They just handed him off to whoever drew the short straw plus He sat by the charger with a permanent frown Like somebody had personally let him down Same electric motor, same yellow frame But Gus made misery into an artful game Turn the key and he'd wake up slow Like he'd rather be literally anywhere else than go [Pre-Chorus] Joe just laughed and shook his head "Gus has been grumpy since the day he was bred" I said, "Forklifts aren't bred, Joe." He said, "Tell Gus that. He won't let it go." [Chorus] Grumpy Gus hates Mondays, Tuesdays too Wednesdays, Thursdays, and most of you If there's work to do, he'll act offended first Like every assignment is somehow cursed Grumpy Gus growls and Grumpy Gus groans Acts like the warehouse ruined his home But when the shift is over and the numbers are tall Grumpy Gus outworked us all [Verse 2] Dispatch called for a trailer unload Gus let out a sound like he hated the road A long low hum of electrical spite Complaining without being Complaint Carl outright We rolled through receiving, stack after stack Gus muttering judgment behind my back Or at least that's what it sounded like to me Every little motor whine said, "Why me?" The funny thing was, despite the act Every pallet landed perfectly stacked No bumps, no scrapes, no damaged freight Gus hated the job... but he did it great [Chorus] Grumpy Gus hates Mondays, Tuesdays too Wednesdays, Thursdays, and most of you If there's work to do, he'll act offended first Like every assignment is somehow cursed Grumpy Gus growls and Grumpy Gus groans Acts like the warehouse ruined his home But when the shift is over and the numbers are tall Grumpy Gus outworked us all [Bridge] Around three a.m. the floor got quiet Just chargers blinking in orderly silence Then I noticed something strange Happy Hank rolled by. Gus immediately got worse. Extra groans. Extra whining. Extra attitude. Joe smiled. [Spoken] "He's jealous." I said, [Spoken] "Of a forklift?" Joe nodded. [Spoken] "Especially Happy Hank." [Final Chorus] Grumpy Gus hates everything in sight Yet somehow keeps the whole place running right Every task gets a dramatic sigh But he never lets a deadline die Grumpy Gus, stubborn and tough Acts like doing good work isn't enough And if you ask him for a little more He'll complain... Then do it better than before [Outro] At sunrise I plugged Gus into his charger. He gave one final irritated beep. Not angry. Not annoyed. Just tired. As I walked away, I looked back once more. Gus was charging beside Happy Hank. And somehow... he'd parked closer to Hank than usual. Though if you asked Gus about it, he'd deny it.
