Chapter 3, Part 3 It processes detected events almost in real time, transmits them quickly and warns the driver visually, audibly and also via voice prompts. That is precisely where its strength lies. Ever since the accident in 2018, I’ve been preoccupied with the question of how to reach a distracted, exhausted or mentally absent driver in time – before a matter of seconds turns into a death sentence. Systems like these therefore represent real progress. Not because they replace responsibility. But because they support responsibility at the crucial moment. They can warn of traffic jams. Of accidents. About breakdowns. About roadworks. About emergency braking by vehicles ahead. About wrong-way drivers. About heavy rain. About slippery roads. And about fog. This broadens the driver’s awareness of potential hazards. And that is precisely what can make all the difference. Alongside these professional, technical and journalistic developments, the material for a book continued to grow. From lectures, discussions, specialist articles, encounters and feedback, a vast repository of knowledge gradually took shape. Much had already been said. Much had already been thought. Much had already had an impact. But it needed to be brought together. Organised. Explored in depth. And made permanently accessible. Thus, step by step, the path led from specialist lectures to the first specialist book of its kind. Not a straightforward path. But a logical one. Drawing on real-world experience in companies, collaboration with the employers’ liability insurance association, specialist debates, technical developments, journalistic coverage and a growing public response, a work emerged that aspired to be more than just a publication. It was intended to be a tool. A guide. And a wake-up call at the same time. The spoken word became technical distillation. Technical distillation became reach. Reach became a book. And from this book sprang new conversations, new partnerships and new steps on the long journey towards greater awareness, less stress and a safe return home.
