[Verse 1] Pulled in under dead bug glass At a truck stop off the blacktop pass She was thumb out by the tire light Old duffel bag and a face too tired Said, "Mister, can you run me south?" I said, "Climb in, girl, let's move this out" She shut the door, looked straight ahead Like she was carrying something dead [Pre-Chorus] Then the bag fell open on the floor Blue steel flash, and nothing more My hands went cold on the wheel Her eyes said, "Now you know the deal" [Chorus] Lot lizard lullaby Don't ask why, don't ask why Lot lizard lullaby One wrong move, and we both might die Lot lizard lullaby Keep it low, keep it quiet Lot lizard lullaby I saw the truth in a stolen sidearm [Verse 2] In the rearview, red and blue State trooper easing up behind us, too She pressed her coat against her chest I said, "Girl, now we're both in this" He leaned in with a paper cup Saw my hands and the bag zipped up She stared ahead like stone in rain And I tried to breathe through the strain [Pre-Chorus] If he asked, I had to stay cool One bad word, then we're both his fools Her knuckles white, my jaw locked tight And the dashboard lit up red and white [Chorus] Lot lizard lullaby Don't ask why, don't ask why Lot lizard lullaby One wrong move, and we both might die Lot lizard lullaby Keep it low, keep it quiet Lot lizard lullaby I saw the truth in a stolen sidearm [Bridge] He let me go with a warning stare He let me go with a warning stare But the engine shook the midnight air She said, "You can drop me past the bend" I said, "Girl, that'd make me your friend" She laughed once, short and dry Like a knife in a hymn gone by Then she vanished in the cedar shade And I drove on with what I made [Final Chorus] Lot lizard lullaby Don't ask why, don't ask why Lot lizard lullaby One wrong move, and we both might die Lot lizard lullaby Keep it low, keep it quiet Lot lizard lullaby And that siren sound still haunts my mind [Outro] Now every stop has that same hard glow Same busted pump, same old no-show I pass by slow, keep my hands on ten But I still hear her say, "Get me out again" Lot lizard lullaby Rolling on in my head Lot lizard lullaby I should've never let her in
