Captain Trenholm orders a quiet approach. The crew works with calm routine, yet something inside the drifting dust feels… awake. The first scans reveal patterns that resemble old communication traces. Fragments. No alphabet. No clear source. More like echoes of something that once existed but no longer speaks. The Romulan Science Officer Taril compares the data to known civilizations, but nothing fits. The signals behave like memories trying to surface through sand. Below them, the planet remains silent. No warp travel, no high technology, no sign of spacefaring life. Yet buried structures show up under the surface, far older than the current inhabitants. A world holding on to secrets it cannot explain. Unexpectedly, small orbital freighters appear—non-warp vessels from a local council. Their envoys request cooperation: they, too, have detected the strange signals. They call them the voices beneath the dust, heard only at dawn when the heated air begins to shimmer. Trenholm agrees to a joint investigation. Diplomacy stays careful and fragile. The Jules Verne keeps a neutral distance; the council remains cautious. And above everything hangs that echo, familiar and unknown at the same time. During a night cycle, the signal shifts. Taril freezes a spectrogram. The bridge falls silent. Something in its core looks almost… humanoid. Or trill-like. Or something between both. One pattern repeats reliably: a shimmering pulse that flickers like a star buried inside the dust. Trenholm orders the data encrypted and forwarded to an external specialist. A name is spoken on the bridge. Quietly. Almost hesitant. “Aisha Bashir.” No one comments. But every officer feels it: The next step will not be purely scientific. It will be personal.
