More Than You See

People see the distraction. They don’t always see how exhausting it can be trying not to be distracted. [Verse 1] They remembered it all morning, then forgot it walking through the door. Not because it didn’t matter— that’s what hurts a little more. They’ve heard, “Why don’t you listen?” They’ve heard, “You never try.” While they’re searching for an answer to something they can’t always describe. Maybe they interrupt sometimes because the thought might disappear. Maybe they look like they’re not listening while they’re fighting just to stay right here. And something everybody calls simple can feel impossible to begin. Not because they don’t want to— there’s just a wall between wanting and doing it. [Chorus] There’s more than you see. More than losing track of time, more than unfinished lists and a constantly wandering mind. Sometimes it’s knowing what needs doing and still struggling with the start. Sometimes it’s forgetting something that genuinely mattered to their heart. Then blaming themselves for things everyone else says should be easy. That’s the part we don’t talk about. ADHD can be more than what you see. [Verse 2] A deadline can feel miles away until suddenly it’s tonight. Hours disappear into something they love, while everything else slips out of sight. They might spend all day putting off something that takes ten minutes to do, then lie awake wondering, “Why couldn’t I just follow through?” And after enough eye rolls, enough jokes about being lazy, enough people getting frustrated— sometimes those words stick. They start wondering if maybe everyone else is right. [Bridge] And here’s where I won’t pretend. I don’t live with ADHD. I don’t wake up inside that mind, so I won’t tell somebody who does that I know exactly how it feels. But I can listen. I can learn. And I can stop confusing something I don’t experience with someone simply not trying hard enough. [Final Chorus] Because there’s more than you see. Behind the missed appointment, behind the unfinished task, behind the person laughing it off because they’re tired of explaining themselves. There can be frustration. There can be incredible focus. There can be creativity, energy, and days when getting started feels enormous. Not every person experiences it the same. That’s exactly the point. Before we judge somebody’s mind from what we see on the outside— maybe we should ask what we’ve never bothered to understand. [Outro] You don’t need to have ADHD to listen to someone who does. Sometimes understanding starts when assumptions stop. This is Outback.
