[ACT II - SCENE 1: THE COFFY TOWN PROWLER DAVID STEINMAN — ROADSIDE NOIR NARRATION] [Narrative-Noir] I pulled over just past the Skawla Water billboard — I suddenly realize I was thirsty — I stepped out onto the gravel shoulder. The sun was sinking low, polishing the gates of Coffy Town down to a copper glow in the late‑day light. I stood there, feeling the weight of sixty years press down on me. I was a made man, formed by the hand of my father. I wasn't raised to ask questions. But I couldn't be more curious about how I could have mistook obedience for virtue. I had let the only real thing that ever touched my heart slip through my fingers like water. [dead-pan] Darn, I was really parched. [instrumental break — low bassline, brushed drums, noir trumpet bending like regret] Compliance is the science of managing the necessity of one's interaction with people. I enjoy alone time in my mancave where I deejay. Mixing on turn-tables Hip Hop music for an audience of two... Me, and my memory of Jaqueline Sinclair. I'd make beats, she'd rhyme and sing... Darn.... [horn swoops down] Life with her would have been so... Musical. Tina’s death cracked my mancave door wide open. The world outside my head wasn't fun at all. The gates of Coffy Town huffed at me in frustration. Here they were glistening with welcome while I was pussyfooting around. An unfamiliar feeling crawled its way up my spine as I ducked back into my car... Something like excitement... followed by a looming, doom-laden charge. Wouldah, Couldah, Shouldah, as they say... If I had known what fear felt like, I would have made a U-turn and steered away. [instrumental swell — noir strings, low brass, tension rising] I took a breath and revved the engine, Crossed through the glowing copper gates of Coffy Town. prayed to myself for forgiveness, hoping for my daughter's grace and my true lady's redemption. Maybe the universe would be kinder than I deserve. [Musical Break] [DAVID - NARRATIVE CONTINUES] So much had changed in Coffy Town since I was last here. There was a Skawla Water stand just around the bend. So thirsty... [dead-pan] Like I said... I'm a lucky man. [less rasp in his voice and more clarity now that he had some water] I stopped for a swig, and slid down Coffy Town's Foundational Block to Jacqueline’s place. She didn't answer the door. I peered into the front window. The side, then the back. Dissapointed she wasn’t inside the bungalow. I returned to my car to find her neighbors watching me through the scopes of their phones. Inside the car, Emcee Skawla was on the the radio with an emergency announcement. Another electric charge shot up my spine telling me my luck was about to run out.
