The Right Way to Say Goodbye

I’m still here. I’ve been quiet for a while – sometimes words just don’t come that easily. Breathing is getting harder. If I were a pessimist, I’d probably say I only have a few weeks left. But thankfully, I’m an optimist – and even if that’s true, a few weeks still sound like enough time for a little miracle. I’m still working hard for that miracle… because hope, after all, is the last thing to die. I’m still enjoying every single day, every moment. I’m not online much anymore. I’m spending my time with my family, making memories, and yes... taking care of the things that still matter to me. There’s a lot I want to finish myself. At least I don’t have to pack any suitcases. And in the middle of all this, there’s still that question: What’s the right way to say goodbye? I don’t know… not yet. Even just thinking about it takes time. My little goal is to see the lights at Christmas, make it to New Year – and if I’m lucky, to the spring, to see the cherry blossoms in the garden once more. Ha, it reminds me of my childhood. I always had a hundred reasons why I wasn’t ready to go to bed yet. Let’s see if that still works today 😆😆😆 I’ll stay as long as I can. 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸 I keep wondering how do you say goodbye without making it sound like goodbye I walk past the flower shop one last time The sign still says, "See you tomorrow" But tomorrow might not wait for me So I just ask myself how do you say goodbye The streets are still half-asleep Coffee steam in the cold morning air The girl at the counter asked how I’ve been And I almost told her, Ready But I just said, Fine, you know busy days, the usual kind It’s easier to lie a little Than leave the truth behind Do I tell them what’s drawing near Or keep it soft so they don’t hear What’s the right way to say goodbye When no one knows it’s goodbye but me Take care feels too thin And I’ll miss you cuts too deep So I just smile and nod Pretend I’ve got somewhere to be And let the quiet keep the secret for me An old friend sent a photo today Of us when our hair was wild and free She wrote, We should meet again soon And I typed Yes, then let it be The truth sits heavy in my chest Some things are kinder left unsaid, I guess Do I write a note, or just disappear Is silence gentler than tears What’s the right way to say goodbye When the world keeps spinning after me Maybe I’ll whisper it to the moon So no one else will see If I say, See you soon It’s not a lie if I believe That love outlives the leaving Maybe goodbyes aren’t spoken Maybe they just fade slow A final wave, a softer breath A letting go we never show Maybe the right words never come They just rest between the lines A quiet truth that time defines What’s the right way to say goodbye When I don’t want it to sound so final Maybe just, See you soon And trust in love’s survival If tomorrow never comes Let the kindness I became Be the light that stays behind me No words Just breath And peace Maybe… there isn’t a right way Maybe it’s enough to live gently and to leave a little love behind ✒️✒️✒️✒️✒️✒️ Lyrics © 2025 Thousand Tomorrows.
