Sometimes a Little Devil Follows Me Around A while back, when I was putting together the story about the great Marble Falls football teams of the 1950s, I ran across an old friend. Well, I’m not going to pretend……….he was actually my cousin. He had played on those teams, so I got him talking about the old days. Before long, the conversation turned to one particular player who, according to Ol Cuz,….., was a bit of a glory hog. I could tell Ol’ Cuz hadn’t liked him much back then—and seventy years hadn’t done a thing to soften his feelings. Since Ol’ Cuz doesn’t do social media, I text him stories and songs I think he’ll enjoy. I’d written the football story and was nearly finished, but I hadn’t published it yet. So I made some quick little changes……….giving that glory-hog player a fake name right here - I’ll call him John Smith. (not his real name - don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings - I’m sensitive like that 😂😂😂😂) I worked him into the story over and over, telling the world what a hero he was. I sent that version to my cousin. Today, I saw Ol’ Cuz, and we went out to Round Mountain for catfish. Somehow, the subject of “the football story” came up. I had completely forgotten about my little prank.,. He told me that when he listened to the version I’d sent him, it got under his skin so badly he “didn’t sleep good for several nights.” Then he mentioned it to someone else, who told him they’d watched the whole thing—and John Smith was barely even mentioned. So the two of them watched it together. To my cousin’s relief, it was a completely different story. I’ll tell you the truth: I had forgotten all about that version until he brought it up today. We got a huge laugh out of it! Sometimes, a little devil follows me around.
