Lyrics by Leonid Hlibov (1827–1893), Ukrainian writer, poet, fabulist, publisher, and public figure. __________ A High Hill Stands A high hill stands, Below the hill — a grove, a grove… A green grove, thick and dense, Like a true paradise. Beneath the grove a little river winds, Its water shines like glass, Through a green valley It runs somewhere away. Near the bank, in quiet shelter, Boats are tied and stand, There three willows bend down, As if they are grieving. When the fair summer passes, Cold winds will blow, Their leaves will fall away, And the water will carry them off. I too grieve beside the river… It runs and murmurs on, And my poor little heart Grows faint and aches. Oh little river, my dear one! Like your small waves, My happy days have run past, And my joys as well. To you, dear little river, Spring will return again, But youth will not return, It will not return. A high hill stands, The green grove rustles, The birds sing loudly, And the little river shines… How good, how joyful It is to live in this white world! So why does my poor little heart Grow faint and ache? It aches and grieves That spring will return, But youth will not return, It will not return.
