Glass Velocity

Streetlights bending in the glass. White lines underneath. Three— two— Don't count. Just breathe. Midnight hanging from the wires, Silver trembling overhead. Every window keeps a secret. Every signal turns to red. I've been moving like a shadow, Taking roads I already know, Keeping both hands on the moment So I never lose control. But tonight the city opens Like a circuit in the rain. And for once— I miss the turn and don't correct the lane. Maybe I don't need a reason. Maybe maps are made to fold. Every road I've memorized just tells me where I've already— go-o-one. Let me disappear in motion, Let the skyline lose its shape. I don't need another answer. I just need a little space. Past the windows, past the headlights, past the names I used to know— If the night keeps moving forward, I can let it take me ho-o-ome. Morning's somewhere past the river. I can almost see the blue. There's a version of tomorrow that I haven't driven through. No one waiting at the corner. No appointment with the past. Just the engine softly humming and the road unfolding fast. Funny how the world gets larger when I stop demanding signs. Every exit says I'm leaving. Every mile says— you're still mine. Maybe freedom isn't distance. Maybe nothing disappeared. Maybe I was standing still because I couldn't stand the— fe-e-ear. Let me disappear in motion, Let the skyline lose its shape. I don't need another answer. I just need a little space. Past the windows, past the headlights, past the names I used to know— If the night keeps moving forward, I can let it take me ho-o-ome. What if I stop? What if all this speed was only another way of staying still? ...No. I know the difference now. Not running. Not hiding. Not trying to outrun what follows. I'm moving because— I want to. Let me disappear in motion! Let the skyline lose its shape! I don't owe the road an answer! I don't need to be afraid! Past the windows, past the headlights, past the person I outgrew— There are ten thousand directions, and tonight I choose one to-o-o! Let the glass become a mirror! Let it show me passing through! I kept waiting for a future— like the future wasn't something I could do! No destination. No revelation. No perfect final line. Just morning breaking somewhere— and this road becoming mine. Streetlights fading from the glass. Blue light underneath. No counting. Just breathe.
