The Day The Shadows Danced

Slow apocalyptic march with deep toms and wooden percussion, male vocals pushed forward and gritty, Low drones and bowed metal scrape under the verses; chorus swells with wordless backing chants and stomps, Reverb is cavernous, everything feels close yet huge, like a ritual in a massive stone hall

[Verse 1] Boots in the dust Hollow ground remembering names Smoke on the hill Carrying unfinished prayers You said the storm Would pass us by this time You watched the wheat Breathe like a frightened choir [Chorus] The sky darkened the day the shadows danced Every house holding its breath in the glass Children counting to ten under beds Under hands While the sky darkened The day the shadows danced [Verse 2] Doors bolted twice Still every lock felt thin Old dogs howled At something just beyond the fence Your good coat hung On the nail You never took it down We tasted iron In the well In our mouths [Chorus] The sky darkened the day the shadows danced Every house holding its breath in the glass Children counting to ten under beds Under hands While the sky darkened The day the shadows danced [Bridge] You asked my name Like you weren’t sure I was me The wind answered Through the splitting apple tree We stood We knelt Yet nothing broke the trance As fields bowed low To watch the shadows dance [Chorus] The sky darkened the day the shadows danced Every house holding its breath in the glass Children counting to ten under beds Under hands While the sky darkened The day the shadows danced
