The Beast

Deep in the woods where the black roots wind, a voice spoke softly through the back of my mind. No footsteps. No breath. Just branches bending— and something ancient watching. The path had vanished beneath the snow, the stars burned dim in a world below. Wirt called his brother through the trees, but only the hollow answered with ease. Then through the dark came a distant glow, a lantern swaying where cold winds blow. Not a beacon. Not a guide. A dying star the night kept alive. And somewhere beyond the skeletal pines, two burning eyes broke through the confines. “Walk no further. Lay down your fear. The woods are endless. The end is near.” A voice like winter, velvet and vile, promised salvation with a patient smile. I am the Beast beneath the boughs, the whispered shape behind your vows. I wear the dark, I breathe the cold, I feed on every soul that folds. Let the lantern burn. Let the shadows grow. Every flame has a debt below. You can run until your lungs collapse— but the Unknown always takes you back. Greg stood beneath an emerald sky, dreaming of kingdoms where the lost never die. But every dream has a root in the ground, and something below was calling him down. The Edelwood waited, pale and still, while darkness climbed every ancient hill. The Beast did not need chains or steel— only a promise of something unreal. Wirt heard the truth beneath the lies: the lantern wasn't where the darkness dies. A thousand voices inside the trees, a brother's heartbeat carried on the breeze. One choice between surrender and flame— one soul to lose, one soul to save. THE BEAST! NO FACE! NO NAME! BLACK HEART! BLACK FLAME! THE LANTERN BURNS! THE FOREST FEEDS! EVERY ROOT REMEMBERS WHAT IT NEEDS! YOU ARE NOT LOST— YOU ARE BEING CLAIMED! I am the Beast beneath the boughs, the hunger hiding in your doubts. But even where the deepest shadows start, there burns a light inside the heart. Let the lantern burn. Let the old lies break. Some chains are forged for hope to take. If the forest wants another soul— then tear its roots apart and take control. The flame still burns. The woods are silent. And for the first time... the Beast is afraid.
