Hallelujah - (Acoustic Version)

Ha… Ha—lle… …lu… Halle— … Hallelu… … I used to know this… [Verse 1] Candles shaking in the colored glass Morning coats and polished shoes that pass Hands together, voices soft and low Words I learned before I learned to know Silver trays and folded linen white Sunday light and everything felt right Laughter drifting through the dining room While someone else was praying in the dark [Chorus] And we sang the same old prayer again Same old saints, same rules, same sin Some had wine and some had none Under the same forgiving sun I closed my eyes, I played along Learned the words before the song Somewhere between the breath and the name I almost whispered hallelujah the same [Verse 2] Sunday smoke and whispers in the hall Names that opened every hidden door Perfume, silk, and quiet charity Given like a small luxury Across the street the lights stayed low Different prayers I didn’t know Different hands held tighter to the plate Different kind of faith in fate [Chorus] And we sang the same old prayer again Same old saints, same rules, same sin Some had gold and some had scars All beneath the painted stars I crossed myself and kept the line Learned to smile at every sign Somewhere between the guilt and the flame Hallelujah didn’t sound the same [Bridge] I knew the hymns before the cost Knew the table, never knew the loss Tried to sing it like before But the word don’t fit no more The bells still ring the way they did Something changed in what I hid My mother's sin, my father's shame [Final Chorus] And we sang the same old prayer again Same old saints, same rules, same sin Some found peace and some found fear Some just disappeared from here I still remember how it came The holy wine, the family name Somewhere between the child and the flame I stopped saying hallelujah the same [Outro] Hallelujah… Hallelujah… Hallelujah… Same old word… Same old sound… Still the one they sang around… Hallelujah… Now I know… what it means… Not the same… as it seemed… Just a word… I can say… Hallelujah… Hallelujah…
