You come in quiet through the doorway When the room has lost its air Someone’s mum is barely breathing Someone’s son is standing there You don’t rush in like thunder You don’t need to save the day You just pull the chair in closer And become the one who stays And there’s no speech that makes it easy There’s no perfect thing to say But you bring calm into the breaking In your ordinary way So here’s to the nurses The ones who stay Through the long nights Through the hard days With tired feet And steady hands You hold the line When no one can Here’s to the nurses On Nurses Day Not for the glory Not for the praise You meet the dark And make it kind You keep the heartbeat Keeping time There are names you still remember There are faces you still see There are families you’ve carried Through the worst they’ll ever be In the hospice room at midnight In the ward beneath the lights You are there inside the silence When love has to say goodbye And you laugh when laughter’s needed And you grieve but carry on You give pieces of your own heart Just to help someone be strong So here’s to the nurses The ones who stay Through the long nights Through the hard days With tired feet And steady hands You hold the line When no one can Here’s to the nurses On Nurses Day Not for the glory Not for the praise You meet the dark And make it kind You keep the heartbeat Keeping time Not angels Not statues Not heroes made of stone Just people Still showing up So no one stands alone For every nurse who held a hand For every nurse who heard the fear For every nurse who stayed beside The ones we wish were still here Here’s to the nurses The ones who stay Through the long nights Through the hard days With tired feet And steady hands You hold the line When no one can Here’s to the nurses On Nurses Day Not for the glory Not for the praise You meet the dark And make it kind You keep the heartbeat Keeping time The ones who stay The ones who stay The ones who stay
