[Verse 1 — Male] Snow is gathering on the rail; Your red scarf hangs beside the mail. I’ve brought the wood, you’ve made the tea; You move a little close to me. The house is quiet, the day is through; There’s something I should say to you. [Verse 2 — Female] We spoke too quickly yesterday; We let our tired hearts lead the way. But there’s a chair beside my chair, And room to set those troubles there. Come warm your hands and start again; I’d like to hear how you have been. [Chorus — Together] There’s a light we leave on, When the day’s gone wrong. There’s a place at the table, And time to stay long. We can lay down our pride, Let forgiveness come inside. Through the cold until the dawn, There’s a light we leave on. [Verse 3 — Male] Across the street, a porch is bare; She’s spending her first winter there. [Female] I made enough for more than two; Let’s take a little supper through. [Together] We’ll bring a chair up to the fire; There’s room to draw the circle wider. [Chorus — Together] There’s a light we leave on, When the day’s gone wrong. There’s a place at the table, And time to stay long. We can lay down our pride, Let forgiveness come inside. Through the cold until the dawn, There’s a light we leave on. [Piano and Vibraphone Interlude] [Bridge — Together] A house grows warm by small degrees: An extra plate, an offered key, The patient words, “I’m listening,” The quiet good that kindness brings. [Final Chorus — Together] There’s a light we leave on, When the day’s gone wrong. There’s a place at the table, And time to stay long. We can lay down our pride, Let forgiveness come inside. Through the cold until the dawn, There’s a light we leave on. [Outro — Together] Let it snow until the morning; There’s a light we leave on.
