#7 "GRADE D" by Half-Meant

V6

[Intro] A folded sheet in the gray envelope. Red square stamped on column four. Skipped the letters straight to D. Slid it under the gas bill by the door. [Verse 1] Drugstore checkout, eight PM. Twelve rolls of paper under my arm. Didn't pay five yen for a plastic bag. Awkward to hold, but I saved the coin. Held my phone up to the scanner, Glass reflected my tired chin. Stepped outside in the gravel lot, Cold air pressing against my skin. [Pre-Chorus 1] Walked the quiet residential street. Started to type the symptom online. Finger hovered above the glass. Slipped the phone back into my pocket. Shifted the pack to my other side, The plastic wrap bit into my hand. I'm not collapsing on the road. I just forgot to eat lunch today. [Chorus 1] A little red D on the folded sheet. Twelve rolls of paper beneath my arm. Nothing broke down on the quiet street. I am too ordinary to come to harm. Completely fine. Probably. The walk is only three blocks from home. [Verse 2] Kicked off my flats at the entrance hall. Hallway smelled of the cedar spray. Bathroom mirror above the sink: Eyeliner smudged at the outer edge. Wiped it off with a cotton swab. Turned on the stove for the pot of broth. Frozen udon in boiling steam. Simple and plain as it's always been. [Pre-Chorus 2] Late-night infomercial on the screen. A ceramic knife slicing through a plum. "Look at that edge," the woman smiled. "Pretty sharp," I said to the empty room. The plum split neatly in two. [Chorus 2] A little red D on the folded sheet. Twelve rolls of paper beside the door. Nothing broke down in this quiet room. I am too ordinary to come to harm. Completely fine. Probably. Still chewing the noodles, thick and warm. [Bridge] "Schedule a follow-up right away." Tomorrow is Wednesday. The day after is Thursday. Sometime next week. Sometime next month. Before the weather turns too warm, probably. [Guitar Solo] [Final Chorus] A little red D on the folded sheet. Drank the broth till the bowl was dry. Nobody weeps over printed ink. I haven't got the time to cry. Nothing bad ever happens to me. [Outro] Exhaust fan humming above the stove. Low, dull motor vibrating slow. Slipped myself into the heavy quilt. Staring straight up at the wooden grain. Just the fan. Spinning around.
