The bear and the lady
The Guardian of the Woods(Verse 1)Deep in the woods where the tall shadows grow,Lived a fierce mother bear that the forest did know. She was big, she was wild, and her roar made you shake,But she loved her small cub every breath she would take.(Verse 2)Every day they would walk to the edge of the trees,Where a little brown house caught the warm summer breeze. An old lady lived there, and she sat on her floor,Waiting each afternoon at her open front door.(Verse 3)The cub would run up for a bowl full of sweet,Of porridge and berries, a wonderful treat. But the mother stood back with her eyes staring wide,Watching the lady from the dark forest side.(Verse 4)Then one chilly morning, the sky turned to grey,And a terrible trap caught the bear on her way.The steel teeth snapped shut with a painful, loud crack,And the fierce mother bear was pinned flat on her back.(Verse 5)She pulled and she bit, but the metal held tight,She lost all her strength and she lost all her might. So the clever young cub knew just what he must do,He ran for the helper that his little heart knew.(Verse 6)He scratched at the door of the cottage so small,Then lay on the mat with no energy at all.The old lady opened the door with surprise,To see the young cub with no mum in her eyes.(Verse 7)The cub took off running back into the shade,He stopped and looked back in the forest clearing glade. With a tilt of his head, he was begging her see,His big eyes were pleading and saying, "Follow me!"(Verse 8)The lady ran fast through the brush and the cold,To the trapped mother bear who was mighty and bold. She brought out some whisky from deep in her pack,To help the poor bear as she lay on her back.(Verse 9)The strong mountain drink made the giant bear blink,And into a deep, peaceful sleep she did sink. The lady unlocked the trap, heavy and old,And bandaged the leg with a care bright as gold.(Verse 10)Now the mother bear stands by the cottage door near,No longer in shadows, no longer in fear. With the cub and the lady, the forest is bright,They live all together in peace and delight.
