Under Velvet Masks

[Verse 1: Her] Silk on the staircase Lanterns hung low Feathers and rumors Every step slow You bow like a secret Hand in a glove I don’t know your real name But I feel your pulse [Verse 2: Him] Silver along your jawline Eyes I can’t read Laughter under fabric You move straight through me We circle like questions Orbit the floor I don’t know your story But I want it all [Chorus: Both] Under velvet masks We’re strangers, pressed so close Spinning in the half-dark Where nobody knows Say you’ll lose your past Just tonight, in my arms Under velvet masks We can be who we aren’t [Verse 3: Her] Your breath on my shoulder Words you don’t say Promises in fragments Then you look away [Verse 3: Him] You ask what I’m hiding I change the tune Still I pull you nearer Like I’ve always known you [Chorus: Both] Under velvet masks We’re strangers, pressed so close Spinning in the half-dark Where nobody knows Say you’ll lose your past Just tonight, in my arms Under velvet masks We can be who we aren’t [Bridge: Her & Him] [soft strings swell, drums pull back] Her: If I lift this edge, will you stay? (will you stay?) Him: If you see my face, will you fade? (don’t fade) Her: All I have is this borrowed name Him: All I am is the part I’ve faked Both: Hold me on the fault line While the room moves slow If midnight unmasks us Are you letting go? [Chorus: Both] Under velvet masks We’re strangers, pressed so close Spinning in the half-dark Where nobody knows Say you’ll lose your past Just tonight, in my arms Under velvet masks We can be who we aren’t [Outro: Both] Music starts to falter Candles burn low You reach for my real face I almost let you know One last turn in the quiet One last stolen chance Leave me in the mystery Leave me in the dance
