[TWD - Challenge 60: Spooky Creatures ] Manananggal

Sound Installation Synopsis: The Beautiful Wife in the Banana Grove Project Type: Audio Installation / Soundscape Focus Segment: From the hiding sequence to the demonic attack Project Overview This audio installation is an immersive horror soundscape based on traditional Philippine folklore. It tells the terrifying story of Danilo, a young farmer who discovers that his beautiful new wife, Maria, is actually a Manananggal—a viscera-sucking, self-segmenting demonic creature. The installation uses spatial audio, visceral sound design, and shifting atmospheric textures to transport the listener directly into the dark banana grove alongside Danilo, capturing his descent from curiosity into sheer panic. Audio Narrative & Timeline • The Hiding (Atmosphere & Tension): The piece opens with the unsettling, heavy silence of a tropical night. Listeners hear Danilo’s quiet, rhythmic footsteps cutting through the brush, followed by the rustling of a palm leaf as he conceals himself. The ambient sounds of the jungle—crickets and distant night birds—suddenly warp, giving way to the rhythmic, low-frequency chanting of Maria’s midnight ritual and the thick, wet sound of oil being smeared onto skin. • The Transformation (The Sonic Climax): The tension breaks with violent, disturbing organic sounds: the agonizing cracking of bones, tearing flesh, and the wet, heavy thuds of internal organs spilling out. A massive, leathery beat of wings signals the upper torso taking flight into the night sky, leaving behind a low, pulsing, wet drone from the stationary lower half of her body. • The Confrontation & Attack: The soundscape fast-forwards through a tense, low-humming passage as Danilo applies salt and ash to the lower torso. The audio then shifts aggressively as the panicking creature returns before dawn. Listeners experience the horrific friction of flesh meeting salt—characterized by acidic hissing, sizzling, and blood-curdling, demonic shrieks. • The Climax: The track reaches its peak intensity as Maria realizes she cannot reattach. Her desperate screams turn into a feral, bloodthirsty roar. The audio creates a terrifying sense of proximity as she lunges through the foliage directly toward the listener ( Danilo's perspective) to rip his throat out, abruptly cut short by the burning, sizzling sound of the first morning sunbeams turning her to ash. Artistic Intention The installation aims to exploit the psychological impact of sound. By relying purely on audio, the piece forces the audience to visually construct the body-horror elements in their own minds, making the experience intensely personal, claustrophobic, and terrifying.
