06 - The Sands of Succession
Decades spun like golden threads, the loom of fate designs, A kingdom vast, its spires beneath the desert sun's shine. The assassin’s thoughts shape his views, the scars of what he'd done, A ruler tempered by this common birth, and the love of his own son. No banners waved for conquest now, no armies to release. Wealth has found his dominion, a kingdom grown in peace. Khensu, withered now by time, his conquests laid to rest, He dreams of peace, of woven trade, a land where lives are blessed. But his age now a handicap, he needs a successor soon, He plans a tournament for a true heir, upon the desert's dunes “Hear me, seekers,” Khensu speaks, his voice a timeless stone, “Prove your worth in mind and blade, for one shall take my throne.” The call went out across the lands, a summons far and wide, “To all with strength and wisdom sharp, let strength and wit collide." And Khensu waits, his throne of gold a stage for fleeting kings, His current flesh, now frail and thin, begins to pull fate's strings. The trials begin: a gauntlet vast of wit, resolve, and brawn, From fields of wheat to desert sands, they fight from dusk till dawn. Meticulously designed he seeks the best with every trial Each an audition, designed to sift gold from grains of lesser style. At last, a victor rises, the peak of human grace, Triumph met with ovation, a legend to take his place. Their spirit burns, their essence sings, the crowd erupts with cheer, While Khensu smiles a secret grin, the ritual drawing near. “Come now,” Khensu declares with pride, “you’ve earned this prize: To duel the king, to test your worth, let our clash baptize.” The victor’s blade finds wrinkled flesh, the king begins to falter, Yet Khensu’s will, an ancient tide, turns weakness into slaughter. Alone within the golden halls, the ritual takes form, The victor’s body, strong and whole, becomes the host reborn. The dagger’s kiss, a fleeting death, the king’s soul slips inside, To wear their strength, to wield their might, their memories as guide. The people chant; the banners rise, the tournament complete, Yet whispers roam the streets of how the king cheats defeat. Still, horns will sound, and oaths are sworn, the tournament persists, A crown eternal, forged in blood, as fate’s cruel hand insists. But deep within the stolen flesh, the echoes start to sing, A haunting hymn, a choir of souls, that pulls upon the king.
