°- The Dumber They Come the Better I Like 'em (1923)
[Spoken Word introduction] Up next is a song originally written by Harry De Costa (lyrics) and Fred E. Ahlert (music) for the 1923 Ziegfeld Broadway musical comedy titled "Kid Boots", which opened on Broadway on December 31, 1923, starring Eddie Cantor. But Cantor had performed the song previously that year, in one of the first-ever "talkies," a short film titled "A Few Moments with Eddie Cantor". So with no further ado, Public Domain Radio presents our own cover of Harry De Costa's 1923 "The Dumber They Come the Better I Like 'em". [Song begins] [Verse 1] I may look simple but I want you to know I've been to college, I'm full of knowledge I'm right at home with brainy men and them, my wisdom I show But when there's clever girls around I get up and go Hey hey, Ok. Those educated babies are a bore I'm gonna say what I said many times before Oh, the dumber they come, the better I like 'em (oh yeah) 'Cause the dumb ones know how to make love (the dumber, the dumber they come, the dumber, dumber, the better) Yeah yeah A (the dumber, the dumber they come, the dumber, dumber, the better) Uh huh, mm mm mm mmmm A wisenheimer has you meet her folks when you call The brainless baby always keeps you down in the hall Oh, the dumbbells I've met, have won beauty prizes (woo-hoo) They look like angels sent from above. They do But The clever girl will want to know if you mean to wed The dumb ones never think of looking that far ahead That's why the dumber they come, the better I like 'em 'Cause the dumb ones know how to make love (know to make love) (the dumber, the dumber they come, the dumber, the dumber, the dumber, the dumber, the better) Oh, the dumber they come, the better I like 'em 'Cause the dumb ones know how to make love Dumber's better. The smart girls speak in Greek and other languages too But the dumb girl's only language is who's poochy poochy is you? Oh, the dumbbells I've met have won beauty prizes They look like angels sent from above Mmmm and they know how to, how to make love But You start by squeezing clever girls, you're soon on the shelf But when you're with dumb Doris you can just be yourself That's why the dumber they come, the better I like 'em 'Cause the dumb ones know how to make love They know how to make love (the dumb, dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumber they come, the dumber, the dumber, the dumber, the better, the better) Yeah man the dumber they come, the better I like 'em 'Cause the dumb ones know how to make love
