I pass the corner where dad’s old car once stood, Porches lean and fences fade, where quiet engines sleep. Funny how winter calls the roads we swore we’d never ride again. I think of car seats, leather and clutter piled, Dad sang off-key while some song spun on the radio, We watched the roadside trees ... a quick stop just to pee, No boss to call our names, just sunlight in that suitcase. Mama used to say, "Keep your coat buttoned tight." She laughed and passed me a sandwich in the back seat. See that mountain wrapped in morning white, Dad's got the wheel, the heater's humming low, Mom's got ham and cheese ... who's wantin' one to go? There's a hole in the water ... like the dam's deep drain in the blue. We'd run the field, kick frost up into the smoke, Dad would cast his line while the dam held all that blue, Smoked links on the spit and the smell of wood stoves, "Food's on the table," Grandma always used to say, We'd hush to hear the crickets and count the fireflies. "ride on," Now I tip my hat to days that made me whole, I count the laughs still hanging ’round my mouth ... those memories weigh like gold. I hope my girls find that same wild, tender road. See that mountain wrapped in morning white, I’m at the wheel, the heater’s humming low, My baby’s got ham and cheese ... kids laughing in the back row, Still that hole in the water ... where the past runs deep and true See that mountain wrapped in morning white, I’m at the wheel, the heater’s humming low, My baby’s got ham and cheese .... kids laughing in the back row, Still that hole in the water ... where the past runs deep and true Yeah...that same wild road "one more time!" See that mountain wrapped in morning white, I’m at the wheel, the heater’s humming low, My baby’s got ham and cheese ... kids laughing in the back row, Still that hole in the water ... where the past runs deep and true Still that hole in the water Still that hole in the water Still that hole in the water
