Saint Maurice Richard, why have you abandoned me? You remain far away, you do not come to rescue me, despite all my complaints. O Saint Maurice, in the day I call to you, but you do not answer. At night I cry out, without finding rest. Yet you are the Saint who sits on your throne, in the midst of the praises of the Holy Flannel. In you already, our elders trusted: they counted on you, and you delivered them. When they cried to you, you helped them; when they counted on you, they were not disappointed. But I am like a worm, I am no longer a man; everyone insults me, the people despise me. Those who see me laugh at me; all of them snicker while shaking their heads: “He trusts in the Holy Flannel? Well then, let the Flannel deliver him now! Since he finds pleasure in it, let it raise him up, then!” You, Saint Maurice, you made me come out of the maternal womb; you placed me in safety on my mother’s breast. From my young age, I was placed under your guard. Even before my birth, you were my patron. Do not stay so far from me, for danger is near, and there is no one who comes to help me. Powerful adversaries surround me: untamable forces are all around me. They open their mouths against me, like a lion that roars and tears apart. I am like water that flows away; all my bones are dislocated. My heart is like wax, it melts within me. My strength is dried up like a shard of pottery; my tongue sticks to my palate. I return to the dust of defeat. Hordes of enemies surround me, the pack of the wicked assails me. They strike my hands and my feet. I could count all my bones; they look at me, they stare at me. They divide my clothes among themselves and cast lots for my tunic. But you, Saint Maurice, do not stay so far! O you, my strength, hasten to help me! Deliver my life from the sword! Protect me from the fury of the dogs! Tear me away from the lion’s mouth! Preserve me from the horns of the bulls! Yes, you have answered me! I will proclaim to my brothers what a Saint you are; I will praise you in the assembly. All you who wear the Holy Flannel, celebrate him! Descendants of the Blue-White-Red, glorify him!
