[Intro] Before I had words I floated in blue No road beneath me Still, I moved through Before you had lungs Before your first cry Mercy was moving In the dark nearby [Verse 1] I was carried in silence Held without hands Salt in my blood Clay in my skin I have been thirsty I have been clean I have been broken By what I need I have been rain On the roof of your fear I have been river When no one came near I have been mercy Running low through the ground I have been proof That the lost still get found [Pre-Chorus] Every tear I buried Rose back to my face Every river bending Still found its place Drop by drop Ache by ache The water knows the way [Chorus] The water knows the way Through the stone Through the clay Through the wound Through the grave The water knows the way It falls from the sky It runs through the vein It washes the mouth That forgot how to pray The water knows the way The water knows the way [Verse 2] I drank from the faucet With grief in my throat I cried in the bathtub So nobody would know I stood in the storm With my hands open wide Like the sky had been keeping What I kept inside [Spirit] I moved through the oceans Before maps were drawn I slept in the iceberg I woke in the dawn I rose as a cloud Then returned as the rain I entered the seed And came back as grain [Pre-Chorus 2] Every cup I lifted Had a world inside Every flood has carried What refused to die Drop by drop Ache by ache The water knows the way [Chorus] The water knows the way Through the stone Through the clay Through the wound Through the grave The water knows the way It falls from the sky It runs through the vein It washes the mouth That forgot how to pray The water knows the way The water knows the way [Bridge] I do not rush Yet I wear down the wall [Body] I do not speak Yet I answer the call I do not stay Yet I never leave I break into tears Then rise into steam I fill the root I fill the bone I carry the dead I carry them home From cloud to creek From creek to sea From sea to sky Back down through me From blood to birth From rain to bread From holy hands To every bed It moves It moves It moves It moves [Chorus] The water knows the way Through the stone Through the clay Through the wound Through the grave The water knows the way It falls from the sky It runs through the vein It washes the mouth That forgot how to pray The water knows the way When the earth goes dry When the heart feels late When the soul forgets How much it weighs The water knows the way The water knows the way [Outro] I was never alone You were carried by rain The water knows the way
