[Verse] It was 1814 We were losin' the war All the fighting in Washington The British were knockin' on the door When Dolly Madison saved George Washington She said "I've been told to run And I don't have much time And I have to choose between What's important and what's mine" And then Dolly Madison saved George Washington [Pre-Chorus] She said "It's not the first time that I've been called crazy It's not the first time I ignored what they told me" [Chorus] The White House was burning and the smoke was risin' up Dolly Madison was runnin' for her life They'd seen fire and they'd seen war But they'd never seen anything like that before When Dolly Madison saved George Washington [Verse] She didn't go upstairs She didn't pack her clothes She went straight to the painting and then she got it off the wall She knew she was savin' us all Then Dolly Madison saved George Washington [Pre-Chorus] And she said "It's not the first time that I've been called crazy It's not the first time I ignored what they told me" [Chorus] The White House was burning and the smoke was risin' up Dolly Madison was runnin' for her life They'd seen fire and they'd seen war But they'd never seen anything like that before When Dolly Madison saved George Washington
