(Kintsugi)

How many times has it been that I’ve rinsed this brush clean? When I run my finger along the chipped rim of the pottery, there’s a cold trace of gold on my tongue. “They say the cracks are what make it beautiful,” an old spell someone decided long ago. I tried so hard to love a view stitched together in pieces. But look at this cup, it’s grown too heavy to lift with one hand. I patched and dried it until I forgot what it used to be. I told myself I was stopping time, but really, I just couldn’t accept it breaking. I won’t draw golden lines anymore. The shattered fragments rest quietly on the floor, breathing just as they are. Leaving it unfixed, that’s the final and gentlest answer. Goodbye, beautiful distortion. I opened the window and let the wind in. A whole season passed through. Memories sealed with glue shine too brightly, too artificially, and they tire my eyes. Anything that takes shape will one day return to the earth. It was only that simple rule we refused to accept. It’s okay to let them stay scattered. I don’t have to gather them anymore. I won’t draw golden lines anymore. The shattered fragments rest quietly on the floor, breathing just as they are. Leaving it unfixed, that’s the final and gentlest answer. Goodbye, beautiful distortion. It’s fine like this. Let it remain broken.
