--- Had a lot of fun with this one. Concept is finally getting up the courage to call your "crush" only to be totally unable to speak after they pick up. So instead of being able to talk to them, you wind up being just a "Ghost on the Line". Had to guide the persona a bit to make sure I got the proper vocals for the proper lines, but I think it worked out well enough. Love the actual "phone vocals" that pop up in the song at times, and the quirky almost phone sounds really work nicely too! Quite nice bubbly fun song that I like how it came out! ~David --- [Musical Introduction] [Filtered phone ring → glitchy vocal chops → heartbeat kick builds] [Verse 1] Sweaty palms, staring at the glass Watching every second drag and pass My thumb hovers like it’s scared of red Rehearsing every word inside my head Name, joke, laugh—something smooth, something cool Now they’re scattered like I never went to school Every sentence that I almost said Turns to static when I see your thread [Pre-Chorus] Ring… ring… I should let it die Ring… ring… but I hit reply [Chorus] Hello, hello, hello— I’m a ghost on the line Just a dial tone spine Holding silence like it’s mine Hello, hello, hello— I disappear on cue Yeah, I wanted to say something to you… But I don’t know how to break through [Post-Chorus] Oh-oh-oh—wait, wait, wait Oh-oh-oh—too late, too late Oh-oh-oh—say something— [cut to silence] [Verse 2] Stupid, heavy breathing in the dark Sounding like a villain with no spark Click—the connection snaps to life And suddenly your voice cuts like a knife You laugh, you sigh, you say “who’s there?” And I freeze like I was never really here Pull the phone away like it might bite Toss it down and vanish from the light Cold sweat, cold feet, tangled in the sheet Every version of me facing defeat [Pre-Chorus] Say it now… or say goodbye Three more seconds… let it die [Chorus] Hello, hello, hello— I’m a ghost on the line Just a dial tone spine Hiding somewhere in between Hello, hello, hello— Every word out of reach Yeah, I practiced how to speak… But it’s different when it’s just . . . me [Musical Interlude] [Bouncy bass groove; Building rhythm from phone taps, vibration buzzes, and notification clicks; punchy guitar stabs; layers of airy “hello” echoes that glitch and pan around] [Music Solo] [Bridge] [Male Vocals - half spoken] Maybe you knew it was me Maybe you checked the ID Maybe you smiled for a second or two Waiting to hear something true [Female Vocals - half spoken] Any word—just one word [Male Vocals] But they’re stuck in my throat Like a dry piece of toast Like a note I can’t quote… [Breakdown] [everything drops out except heartbeat + faint ringing] [Female - Whispered] …hello? (. . . hello? . . .) [Chorus] Hello, hello, hello— I was there on the line Every second, every time Just afraid of what you’d find Hello, hello, hello— If I called you again… Would you wait ‘til the end? Would you listen if I let you in? [Outro] I’ll try again next week When my hands don’t shake When my voice doesn’t break When the silence gives way Goodbye… goodbye… goodbye… —or maybe just… goodnight [Musical Ending] [phone tone resolves into a warm chord → fades out]
