Peel My Banana

V6

[Intro – Lazy Piano, Brushed Drums, Walking Bass] I was sitting at the bar, minding my own business. Nursing something golden, in a state of perfect stillness. Then the doorway opened, and the whole room lost its air. She walked in like a blessing, with trouble everywhere. [Verse 1] I thought, “Damn, I’m looking messy.” My tie was hanging wrong. My hair had lost the battle, and my drink was far too strong. But then our eyes connected, and she gave a little grin. The brass section got excited when she slowly wandered in. [Pre-Chorus – Muted Trumpet Answers] She leaned upon the counter, with confidence and poise. Then spoke above the piano in a low and velvet voice. [Chorus – Playful Swing] She said, “What’s your poison?” I said, “Are you for real?” She gave me that kind of stare that makes a grown man squeal. She said, “Hey there, mister, your heaven is right here. Come with me right now, if you want to disappear.” I straightened up my necktie, and finished my Havana. “Okay, ma’am, you really wanna peel my banana?” [Brass Hit] Ba-na-na! [Verse 2] She laughed into her cocktail, then took me by the hand. My knees began to wobble, but I tried my best to stand. I knocked into the waiter, spilled olives on the floor. Then confidently strutted straight into the kitchen door. [Spoken – Bartender] Wrong way, Romeo. [Verse 3] I turned around with dignity, or what was left of mine. She waited by the hallway, looking dangerously fine. The piano played a flourish, the drummer tapped the rim. The whole bar started betting on what would happen next to him. [Chorus – Full Brass and Group Vocals] She said, “What’s your poison?” I said, “Are you for real?” She gave me that kind of stare that made my trousers squeal. She said, “Hey there, mister, your heaven is right here. Come with me right now, I’ll make your worries disappear.” I straightened up my necktie, and finished my Havana. “Okay, ma’am, you really wanna peel my banana?” [Group Vocals] Peel it! [Instrumental Break – Clarinet, Trumpet and Stride Piano] [Bridge – Slow and Dramatic] Now, gentlemen, take warning, when temptation calls your name. A lady with a question may be playing quite a game. For when we reached the hallway, she stopped and faced me square. Then handed me her handbag and said, “Hold this right here.” [Break – Music Stops] She went into the bathroom… And left me standing there. [Slow Trombone Fall] [Final Chorus – Fast Swing] She asked, “What’s your poison?” I thought romance was near. She said, “Hey there, mister, your heaven is right here.” But I stood there with her handbag, looking foolish by the door. While everybody laughed until they landed on the floor. No passion, no excitement, no wild Copacabana. Nobody was ever gonna peel my banana! [Group Vocals] No banana! [Outro – Muted Trumpet and Piano] So I went back to the counter, ordered whiskey with a sigh. The bartender said, “Banana?” I said… “No, thank you. Make it rye.” [Final Brass Hit]
