The Boss Wants Gift Cards

V6

[Intro — spoken, amused] A message from the boss? Well, there goes my lunch break. [Verse 1] My phone lit up at a quarter past noon, “Need a little favor, and I need it soon.” The boss’s name was right there on the screen, But the number was one that I’d never seen. “Buy some gift cards, five hundred will do. Keep it a secret, I’m counting on you.” “In a big meeting, so don’t call today.” Well, that’s a curious thing to say. [Chorus] The boss wants gift cards, Says, “Send those codes to me!” But a name upon a little screen Doesn’t prove who it could be. Big rush, big secret, That’s my cue to pause. I’ll verify before I buy, Even when it says “the boss.” [Verse 2] I found their number in our directory, Called them up: “Was that message from you to me?” They said, “Gift cards? That wasn’t my request. And since when do I tell you how to spend your lunch rest?” [Spoken — quick, amused] Okay… fair point. [Verse 3] I sent the suspicious message to IT, With the number and the time it came to me. No codes sent out, no shopping spree, And my sandwich got some quality time with me. [Bridge — reassuring] If you bought the cards or sent the codes, Speak up quickly, let somebody know. Tell IT exactly what you did, It’s harder to help when the story stays hid. [Spoken Break — two voices] “So… you don’t need gift cards?” “No.” “Not even for employee appreciation?” “Nice try.” [Final Chorus] The boss wants gift cards, Says, “Send those codes to me!” But a name upon a little screen Doesn’t prove who it could be. Big rush, big secret, That’s my cue to pause. I’ll verify before I buy, Even when it says “the boss.” [Outro — spoken] Call the number you already know. Lunch can wait. The gift cards can definitely wait.
