Old Friends and Badges
[INTRO — warmer Spaghetti Western × Outlaw Country | ~94 BPM | BOOMING DREADNOUGHT | lazy drums/snare behind beat | five-string bass | dry TELECASTER] [TELECASTER — confident 1–♭3–4→5 lick | deliberately AVOID ♭5/6 supernatural signature] [LOW MALE BARITONE — storyteller] They saw his dust by half-past noon, Three miles down the county road, Twenty riders, two black wagons, And a flag above the load. Marshal Robert Barrow coming, Big as stories said he'd be, Laughing from a chestnut saddle Like the whole damn world was free. Children ran beside the horses, Church bell rang above the square, And Sheriff Elias Winter Was already waiting there. Robert swung down from the saddle, Grinned and opened both his arms— Said, “Hell, Eli, you got older.” Winter said, “You got fat.” [TELECASTER — playful bend] [ROBERT — booming laugh] Verse 2 [WARM GROOVE | old-friends atmosphere] They'd ridden trails together Back before the badges came, When Robert earned his reputation And Elias earned his name. Now one wore the Marshal's silver, One kept Winter County law, But Robert still called Winter “Eli”— Like the years weren't there at all. Over supper Robert told him, “Half those bastards want my chair. Three will smile and shake my hand While hiring guns somewhere.” Winter poured another whiskey. Said, “Then why ride north to me?” Robert raised his glass: “Because I know what your word means.” [TELECASTER — restrained 5→6, warm rather than supernatural] Chorus [OPEN GROOVE | cinematic but restrained] Old friends and badges, Old debts and scars, Some men count their promises, Some count courthouse bars. The Iron Chair makes enemies Faster than it makes friends— And a man who wants to keep his seat Better know who'll guard his ends. Robert said, “Ride south beside me.” Winter stared into his drink. Outside something scraped the window— [RESONATOR — VERY DISTANT ♭5→5→6] And gave them both a reason to think. Verse 3 — Upstairs [INSTRUMENTS THIN | dreadnought + bass | no obvious horror cue] Youngest Winter loved the rooftops, Climbed where boys ain't meant to climb, Knew every ledge and weather vane, Had been warned a hundred times. That afternoon he went exploring, High above the stable yard, Saw something through an upstairs window— [PAUSE] Something men were guarding hard. [DO NOT EXPLAIN WHAT HE SAW] A voice said, “Boy...” Another: “He saw.” [TELECASTER — single ♭5] Then boots moved fast across the floor. Instrumental Turn [DREADNOUGHT — low ominous ostinato] [TELECASTER — human danger: ♭3→4→♭5 | repeatedly REFUSE resolution] [RESONATOR remains SILENT] [ONE DRY SNARE CRACK] Verse 4 They found him broken by the stable, Breathing shallow in the dirt. Doctor said, “He's still among us. Can't yet tell you how he's hurt.” Elias never raised his voice. That made everybody still. Robert stood there hat in hand, All laughter gone and face gone chill. Someone said, “The boy fell climbing.” Winter looked toward that high room. Looked back down at his youngest son. Said, “Maybe.” [LONG SILENCE] Bridge — The Second Visit [NIGHT | nearly spoken vocal | low bass + dreadnought] Three nights later, house gone quiet, Youngest Winter hadn't stirred. Someone crossed the downstairs hallway Without making much a word. Up the stairs. Past the lamplight. Little bedroom at the end. Door eased open— Steel caught moonlight. [TELECASTER — sharp ♭5] Then the boy's old hound went mad. [DRUMS EXPLODE briefly] Chair went over. Footsteps running. Window breaking. Rider gone before the men Could get their boots on. Refrain [LOW, controlled] A fall can happen. Boys climb high. Old boards break. And young men lie. But knives don't wander into bedrooms. And strangers don't come just to pray. Sheriff Winter looked at Robert. Said, “You're leaving here today.” Verse 5 Robert said, “Then ride beside me. That's what brought me north this far. I need one honest badge behind me When the others start their war.” Winter looked toward his son's room. Then north toward the whitening hills. One danger waited for his family. One waited past the mills. [RESONATOR — distant ♭5→5→6] He said, “Robert, there's another thing.” Marshal sighed: “Your winter talk again?” Elias watched the mountains. “Words are wind.” [RESONATOR — ♭2→1, almost inaudible] “But some winds bury men.” Final Chorus [FULL BAND | darker version of first chorus] Old friends and badges, Old debts and scars, One man watches enemies, One watches northern stars. The Iron Chair makes enemies. Blood makes enemies too. And somewhere somebody knows exactly What that youngest boy once knew. Robert rides south tomorrow. Winter rides beside his friend. [RESONATOR — ♭5→5→6] While August snow keeps falling... Where the telegraph lines end. Outro [STRIP TO DREADNOUGHT + RESONATOR] Youngest Winter opens his eyes. [PAUSE] Nobody sees. His lips move once. No sound comes out. Outside— [RESONATOR — ♭2→1] A black bird leaves the trees. [NO RESOLUTION]
