[Noir Narrative, no singing, no rapping] On the drive, I kept seeing her face in my mind. The mother of my child. Former lover. Student. The way she looked at me when she was eighteen — bright, brilliant, beautiful — before I ruined everything. Before greed turned me into a rich coward. Before I took our daughter from her and looked away. [Noir Narrative, no singing, no rapping] Jaqueline Sinclair. Never the damsel, though she could be a handful. My love for her landed somewhere between respect and honor. She never pressured me for more. Even when I brought up my marriage, she’d just say she had no space for excuses, no taste for delusions. [Noir Narrative, no singing, no rapping] She hardly gave me time to protect her. By the time she told me something had happened, she had already exacted her revenge. [Noir Narrative, no singing, no rapping] I was drawn to her confidence and intellect — the way she saw the world and navigated it. Some people think of dreams as silly things high ideas most will never achieve. Jacqueline Sinclair found truth in her sleep It was a type of magic I had never seen, nor since. Once, I punched a very powerful man in the face for what he proposed she should do in his office. It was the first time I’d seen her shell crack. She wondered out loud what she had done — or what I had said — to make the music executive think she would go there. Seeing her cry was hard to bear. Knowing she looked at me with suspicion, She grew harder still, Heart of steal I couldn’t lift it. I told her to leave the coins on the table. I bought her a little bungalow in Coffy Town so she’d have a soft place to land. Years later, I snatched that music label out from under him, but she didn’t want any part of it. After getting her settled in, I couldn’t pretend that anything more wouldn’t be a threat to my lifestyle. I told myself it was kindness. I couldn’t give her a man... [pause] because I wasn’t one yet. [FX: Wind rushes past the car. A single horn stab — distant, prophetic.] [Noir Narrative, no singing, no rapping] A man can tell himself anything until he’s living in the truth. Truth will set you free, but it won’t tell you where to go, or what to do, now that you have had a taste of the forbidden fruit. What do you do with truth one you have it? [FX: A sudden drop in the engine hum — like the world holding its breath. Serious, no laughter] I was idling at the intersection of HIP Way and Consequence Street in Coffy Town when my phone chimed with another menacing message. “Don’t worry. You won't be in mourning for long. [drums of doom and anticipation] You're next.” The laughing, spinning skull, melted into a pool of gold that filled the screen of my phone. [FX: drums of doom, Fade out. A metallic chime echoes — the same one Lady heard in her dream.]
