[Verse 1] Nothing to do, Nellie Darling Nothing to do you say, Let's take a trip on memory's ship, Back to the by-gone days Sail to the old village school house Anchor outside the school door, Look in and see, there's you and there's me, A couple of kids once more. Read-in' and 'rit-in' and 'rith-me-tic, Taught to the tune of a hick-'ry stick, You were my queen in calico, I was your bashful bare-foot beau, And you wrote on my slate, I love you Joe, When we were a couple of kids. [Verse 2] 'Mem [Verse 2] 'Member the hill, Nellie Darling And the oak tree that grew on its brow? They've built forty stories up on that old hill And the oak's an old chestnut now 'Member the meadows so green dear, So fragrant with clover and maize, Into new city lots and preferred business plots, They've cut them up since those days. (Oh how things have changed, 'Member when we were a couple of kids) [Chorus] School days, School days, dear old golden rule days Read-in' and 'rit-in' and 'rith-me-tic, Taught to the tune of a hick-'ry stick, You were my queen in calico, I was your bashful bare-foot beau, And you wrote on my slate, I love you Joe, When we were a couple of kids. Nothing to do, Nellie Darling Nothing to do you say, Let's take a trip on memory's ship, Back to the by-gone days "School Days (When We Were a Couple of Kids)" is a classic American popular song written in 1907 by the songwriting team of Will D. Cobb (lyrics) and Gus Edwards (music). It's a sentimental look back at childhood and primary school from the perspective of a mature couple. The song was the centerpiece of a Broadway show also titled School Days in 1908 and became the template for Gus Edwards' famous "schoolroom" Vaudeville acts. The lyrics "Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rith-me-tic, taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick" became part of American folklore. Famously used in the 1932 cartoon "School Days" and was performed by Bing Crosby in the 1939 film The Star Maker, a fictionalized biography of Gus Edwards.
