(Pg 73) My Father Let This Cup Pass… by Kay Collins Mayes
As Jesus climbed the Mount of Olives, He staggered, and nearly fell! His disciples quickly supported Him, They feared He was not well. Taking Peter, James, and John with Him, He entered Gethsemane; At the entrance, of the Garden He said, "Will you not pray with Me?" Taking a few steps, He was overcome With agony He could not conceal! Satan and his hosts of darkness were there, With all their demonic zeal. "If you take the sin and guilt of this world, You will be forever lost! Your separation from God will be eternal! Have you really counted the cost?" His Father's face was hidden, And Christ could not sense His love; "Oh, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass!", He cried to God above. Then, desiring the comfort of His closest friends, He found them fast asleep; "Could you not watch with Me one hour? The spirit, is willing, but the flesh is weak." Overcome with super-human agony, He staggered, and again fell prostrate! May our hard hearts be softened, As this garden scene we contemplate. Blood was forced from His pores, As our suffering Redeemer agonized for victory; Three times He prayed, "If it be possible, Let this cup pass from Me!" Our eternal destiny was in the balance, As the cup trembled in His hand; The thought this world would be forever lost, Was more than He could stand! He cried, "Father, not My will, but Thine be done, For there is no other way!" Having made His surrender, He fell, dying to the ground! Our salvation was assured that day. The angel Gabriel came to the dying Saviour, With assurance from Above; He strengthened Him to drink the bitter cup saying, "Your Father sends His love." The depression lifted, and Jesus went forth To meet the mob's cruel anger; He stood before that furious crowd, calm and serene, In the very face of danger.
