One passenger disembarks—steady, focused, with the quiet presence of someone who sees more than she ever admits: Aisha Bashir. In the dim lights, her eyes shimmer for a moment, a faint star-like glint that seems almost shy. The greeting is brief and professional. No reunions, no small talk—only data. Trenholm hands her the encrypted echo. Aisha scrolls through the readings, then freezes at one particular sequence. For an instant she seems to fall inward, as if recognizing something only she could detect. “This is Dax,” she says. “Or… something touched by Dax.” Not a memory. Not knowledge. More like a thread resonating in her blood. She asks for deeper access to the signal layers. The echo shifts the moment she approaches, altering frequencies as if it had expected her appearance. Each pattern bends toward her presence. Together with Taril and Ensign Robin Adler, she reconstructs the origin: an ancient station, collapsed long ago, its datacores preserved under the sand. The local inhabitants protected the site for generations, never understanding what they were guarding. Dax had been there. Not Ezri. Not Jadzia. An earlier host. Something from that visit remained behind, caught in the dust. Aisha touches the crystal core. The star-glint in her eyes flickers softly. The echo stabilizes, aligning itself as if recognizing a familiar mind. Diplomacy shifts toward calm cooperation. The local governments find common ground once the signal’s purpose becomes clear: not a threat, but a preserved archive waiting for the right interpreter. With the crew’s help, a fragile peace begins to form. When the mission concludes, Aisha stands at the observation deck. She does not look triumphant or tired—just relieved. “Sometimes,” she says, “we leave traces without knowing it. And sometimes they find us again.” The Jules Verne sets a new course. The echo fades. The stars remain. And for one brief moment, the light in Aisha’s eyes carries the memory of someone only she can truly remember.
