Cherry Street corners, my lungs running dry, the comics were waiting but I still passed them by. I crashed into her with the fire in her eyes, she cursed at her hair while I plotted my lies. By the time I arrived, the shelves were bare, the pages I needed were no longer there. [Chorus 1] I was just a kid, running out of time, looking for a story I could call mine. Every breath I took only left me behind, I was just a kid, running out of time. [Verse 2] Two punks in the alley with a knife in his hand, I dropped all my money, kicked dirt, and I ran. Weeks turned to nights by a dinerās door, and there she was working, I kept staring for more. One night I walked her the long way around, through alleys where danger was easy to drown. The blade cut my shoulder, I stood through the pain, holding her close in the dark, in the rain. [Chorus 2] I was just a kid, running out of time, bleeding for a story I could call mine. Every scar I kept only blurred the lines, I was just a kid, running out of time. [Verse 3] She tore off my bandana, tied it firm on my arm, told me my hair looked better when it fell apart. By Christmas she left me, her gift in my hand, a red string, a pendant, my name carved in sand. Her words cut colder than December skies, āTomorrow Iām leaving, forget what we tried.ā I searched in her eyes but mercy was gone, I was left with a necklace, and the night moved on. [Final Chorus] I was just a kid, running out of time, losing every moment I thought was mine. Every love I touched only slipped through my hands, I was just a kid, trying to understand. [Outro ā open-ended] Now Iām standing on the rooftop, the city below, head in my hands, nowhere left to go. The wind cuts through me, the silence wonāt bend, it feels like the world has come to an end. Tears hit the concrete, my voice breaks in two, I whisper the questions I canāt answer through. And maybe tomorrow Iāll find a way, but tonight I donāt know if Iāll make it, or stay. (band swells, fading unresolved)
