Deep beneath the mountain, where the blackened anvils ring, The dwarves were forging weapons for the battle they would bring. Beyond the iron gates, beneath the smoke-black sky, Came an army without number, and the dragon took the sky. The orcs came like a river, green beneath the moon, Their war drums shook the caverns like the beating of a tomb. The dragon spread its iron wings and breathed a river flame, And every dwarf who saw it knew the price of war had came. **[Pre-Chorus]** The odds were cruel, the numbers vast, The walls were breaking, falling fast. But from the forge a hammer rang— One final note before the clang. **[Chorus]** **Raise the hammers! Raise them high! Stand together, do or die! Steel to steel and shield to shield, Never yield and never kneel! Raise the hammers! Let them hear! Dwarven hearts know not the fear! Though the dragon darkens all, We will stand or we will fall!** --- **[Verse 2]** The king stood on the battlement, his beard was streaked with gray, He watched a thousand torches turn the darkness into day. He counted every warrior, then counted them again, For every dwarf behind the wall stood fifty thousand men. "How can we face an army That stretches past the stone? How can we fight a dragon That makes the mountain groan?" Then from the oldest chamber Came a thunder from below— The gates of ancient armories Were opening in a row. **[Chorus]** **Raise the hammers! Raise them high! Stand together, do or die! Steel to steel and shield to shield, Never yield and never kneel! Raise the hammers! Let them hear! Dwarven hearts know not the fear! Though the dragon darkens all, We will stand or we will fall!** --- **[Verse 3]** The first rank met the orcs beneath the mountain's burning crown, The axes struck like lightning and the enemy came down. But still they came by thousands, still the dragon filled the sky, And every dwarf who watched the battle knew that many more would die. The walls began to shatter, The gates began to bend, The king cried, "Hold the fortress! This is not where we will end!" Then suddenly the mountain Gave a mighty roar— **The hidden clans came marching Through the ancient eastern door!** --- **[Bridge — The Muster]** From the northern mines came warriors, From the southern halls came steel, From the caverns underneath the earth Came those who would not kneel. The smiths abandoned anvils. The miners dropped their picks. The old and young stood shoulder-to-shoulder, Every dwarf among the ranks. **Hammer! Axe! Shield! Blade!** **Brothers of the mountain, Stand unafraid!** **Hammer! Axe! Shield! Blade!** **For every fallen dwarf, A thousand hearts are made!** --- **[Verse 4]** The dragon dove like thunder, Its fire became the rain, But dwarven shields rose like a wall And swallowed up the flame. The warriors struck its armor, The archers found its eyes, The dragon screamed above them And the mountain heard their cries. Then came the final charge, The drums began to pound, Ten thousand dwarves came roaring As the stone shook all around. The orcs began retreating. The dragon turned to flee. But the dwarves had found their fury— **And fury does not flee.** --- **[Final Chorus]** **Raise the hammers! Raise them high! Let the dragon meet the sky! Steel to steel and shield to shield, This mountain never shall we yield! **Raise the hammers! Let them ring! Hear the mountain warriors sing! Though the enemy filled the plain, We have come to rise again!** **Raise the hammers! Raise them high! Dwarven fire will never die! Orcs may come by endless waves, But the mountain makes its brave!** **Raise the hammers! Strike the stone! This mountain is our ancient home! Dragon, hear the battle cry— **Tonight your fire learns to die!** --- **[Outro]** The morning came upon the mountain, And the battlefield was still. The dragon lay beyond the valley, Broken underneath the hill. The orcs were gone like shadows. The banners flew again. And every dwarf who still was standing Raised his hammer with his friends. The king looked at the mountain, At the warriors standing there. He smiled beneath his battered crown And whispered through his beard: **"We were never many.** **We were never safe.** **But when the darkness came for us,** **we became the mountain's strength."** **Raise the hammers! Raise them high! Raise them high! Raise them high!** **For the mountain still is standing, And the dwarves are still alive!**
