Background information: Vienna / Leiden, (NL) 1910: Gustav Mahler, the visionary of modern symphonic music, stands at the abyss. While working feverishly on his unfinished 10th Symphony, his world collapses. A heart condition confronts him with his imminent death; the loss of his daughter overshadows his soul and burdens his marriage; and the discovery of his wife Alma's affair with the architect Walter Gropius plunges him into a deep identity crisis. In Leiden, he seeks out the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, who credits Mahler with a profound capacity for self-reflection but is ultimately unable to help him. __________________________________________ [Intro] Vienna 1910 The world of the composer, Gustav Mahler is falling apart. His body is failing. His young daughter is lost to the grave. And his wife has turned to another. In a state of total collapse, he seeks the truth from Sigmund Freud. [Part I: Sigmund Freud (The Witness)] I saw the light within his mind, so brilliant and so pale, A king without a solid ground, whose strength began to fail. He knows the source of every drive, he understands his dread, But wisdom is no anchor when the light of life has fled. I showed him where his shadows hide, I named his inner ghost, But logic cannot save a man when he is needed most. He isn't lonely by mistake, he seeks the empty space, Reflecting through my therapy a dream he can’t embrace. A witness to his own decline, so deep, so clear, so true – But understanding cannot help to pull a mortal through. [Part II: Alma Mahler (The Mirror)] I gave up all my songs for him, a sacrifice so vast, But I was slowly drowning while the years were drifting past. I loved the lightning of his soul, the depth of all he knew, But while he reached for distant stars, I faded from his view. He loves the silence more than me, he needs to be alone, Within his halls of symphony, I lived and died unknown. The other man was not a win, no game of pride or art, He was the echo of myself, a pulse to wake my heart. I only wanted to be seen, to feel a living spark, For staying by a giant’s side means vanishing in dark. [Part III: Gustav Mahler (The Confession)] The curtain shakes, the music breaks, the notes are stripped and bare, No heaven’s joy can rescue me or answer for my prayer. I look below and doubt it all: what’s left of who I am? If there’s no God to catch my soul, will you still hold my hand? You are my final word of faith, my longing and my strife, Within your palm I place the beat of this, my broken life. I called for God, I called for you, the names have merged in one, For without love the Great Beyond is empty and undone. Too late I learned that being near is what a man requires, I’m standing at the edge today, where every art expires.
