[intro] Well the hour was late, And the tired first mate, Kept a watch, eyelids starting to droop, As he leaned on the anchor, Of the rusty old tanker, The fog rolled in thick as pea soup, Lidless moon in the skies, Blinking sleep from his eyes, Swore he saw something out in the mist, Flying no country's flag, With her sails torn to rags, Not one light, and to port she would list [chorus] Then the captain's voice came, soft and slow, "Well she's going where only ghosts know..." [verse] Mate went to sound alarm, Captain said, "There's no harm, Not just yet, only you here, and me, Aye, I've seen her before, While the crew would all snore, But her story belongs to the sea, Now her Captain's a wraith, For his wife wasn't chaste, And she knew too well the crew's boys then, And it all turned to terror, On the S. S. Silvera, As they clutched at their throats from the poison, [chorus] As she passed well the winds howled so low, "Now she's going where only ghosts know..." [bridge] The Captain was haggard, His face was forlorn, "Well she only appears, 'Fore a terrible storm, Saw her last as a mate, Is it fate, on the S. S. MacIver She went down in a squall, I...the only survivor... [outro] Well they fought the storm brave, But then came a rogue wave, And their ship met a watery fate, He was clinging to flotsam, When the rescuers got 'im, All went down but the half drowned first mate, Well he'd shiver and shake, Left the wreck in their wake, Asking questions that he couldn't answer, But he told of a ship, Sailing out of the mist, They'd all say "Afraid mad's gone the man, sir" [chorus] Then a voice came through the radio, "Well we're goin', where only ghosts know." [outro] If you see the Silvera, while out on the waves, Better turn back for home, if your soul would be saved, And if not, well good luck in the gale, But she'll spare one to whisper the tale...
