Knight in shining black armor Mud on the steel and his hands Ghosts stitched into his banner Marching where he stands Rust taste stuck on his tongue From battles he can’t unsee Every prayer on his lips Feels like blasphemy [Chorus] But when he closes his eyes He’s laying down the shield at last No more echoes of cries No tally of the fallen past He’s begging under his breath For all of this war to cease Knight in shining black armor Wants his soul to rest in peace [Verse 2] Oath to the crown on his shoulder Weight of a kingdom’s demand Snowflakes melt on the leather Mix with the blood on his hands He rides where the trumpets call Through smoke that never clears Keeps his face like carved stone Hides a heart carved by his fears [Chorus] But when he closes his eyes He’s laying down the shield at last No more echoes of cries No tally of the fallen past He’s begging under his breath For all of this war to cease Knight in shining black armor Wants his soul to rest in peace [Bridge] If the king could see the cracks Would he still call him brave? (oh) If the bards sang what he feels Would they still cheer his name? He’d trade every gilded vow Every banner in the breeze For one quiet night of sleep And his soul at rest in peace [Chorus] ’Cause when he closes his eyes He’s laying down the shield at last No more echoes of cries No tally of the fallen past He’s begging under his breath For all of this war to cease Knight in shining black armor Just wants his soul to rest in peace
