You Were a Song (raven)

[[INTRO: Electronic loops and processed textures establish a mechanical atmosphere]] Handle me carefully or carelessly. It does not matter. Handle me carefully or carelessly. It does not matter. Just handle me, Just handle me [[VERSE 1: Spoken-word vocal enters over repetitive groove]] I walked through the room In the wake of something in you singing At first I thought you were pretentious But it was fragility you were bringing Hidden under a mask of arrogance Because arrogance holds up better Under the scrutiny. You’re not a raven, not a raven after all. You’re not a raven after all that love. You grew up, and then you got real small. You’re not a raven; you’re a dove. You’re not a raven; you’re a dove. [[CHORUS 1: Repeated commands reinforce the central concept]] Lemme sing you because you’re a song. Lemme sing you all night long Lemme sing you because you’re a song. Lemme sing you all night long You’re a song I’ve always wanted to sing Let the joy ring out, hit the sky, and float Lemme sing you; I’ll do just about anything. Gotta help me, baby, cuz I can’t hit the note. [[VERSE 2: Additional samples and textures expand the arrangement]] Things getting complicated as the night wears thin (air is thin up in here) We’re sitting here at the mercy, at the mercy At the mercy of our circumstance. Some countries have hunting seasons This one has its eye on you I wish I could explain all the reasons Doves don’t stand a chance; they never do All a dove has is the mercy of others To keep it alive, to keep it alive All a dove has is the mercy of others To keep it alive, to keep it alive [[INSTRUMENTAL PASSAGE: Electronic layers and guitar effects take focus]] [[VERSE 3: Vocal repetition becomes increasingly hypnotic]] Can you be a raven just for a little while? Can you fake it like you’re a bird of prey? Can you be a raven just for a little while? Can you fake it like you’re a bird of prey? Put on the mask, put on a smile When a door opens, we’ll fly away. Put on the mask, put on a smile When a door opens, we’ll fly away. C’mon, fly, little dove, singing your song C’mon, fly, little dove, singing your song [[EXTENDED CHORUS: Dense layering of loops, effects, and background vocals]] Lemme sing you because you’re a song. Lemme sing you because you’re a song. Lemme sing you; I’ll do just about anything. Lemme sing you all night long Lemme sing you because you’re a song. [[OUTRO: Textures gradually dissolve into ambient processing and repetition]] Little dove, little dove, sing as you fly away Flight into the night As you hang on the breeze Little dove, little dove, Eyes of electric black Head for moonlight through the filter of trees. Little dove, little dove, Sing your way outta here Little dove, little dove, Fly your way outta here
